SECRETS OF HAPPINESS IN MARRIAGE
UNSELFISHNESS AND PARTNERSHIP.
WHAT THE WIVES OF THE FAMOUS HAVE TO SAY:
"The Secret of My Successful Marriago" is the provocative titla of a small book (John Long, Ltd., (1), to which Lady Baden-Powell, Lady Conan Doyle, Mrs. J. B. Clynes, Mra. Inge, Mrs. Joseph Conrad, ad Mrs. Munnings, wife, of the famous artist, have each a confessional chapter.
Those whose marriages are not so successful cannot expect to find a sovereign remedy in the book; for all the wives concerned 'áre, indis putably, married to the right men. To achieve that-the initial certain.) ly, and never to marry without it- is another story. However, granted that foundation, these "secrets" contain much common sense, much happiness beautifully expressed, and a sound exposition of "give-and take," which will help a multitude of puzzled husbands and wives,
Hard Work and Happiness. Mrs. Clynes' contribution is vigorous and refreshing.
"Marriage," she says, "would he happier state were wo to discard most of the inaccurate, unreasoning, and unnecessary theories which, we build up round it. People are made afraid to face realities by endless discussion of adjusting one's personality and the psychology of marriage — and we quite lots sight of the fact that marriage is a practical contract."
Again, I am. of the opinion that we should be brought up from our childhood to regard it as normal and natural that two people should decide to share their lives and live for one an- other." And yet again," the framework of happiness in married life is constructed upado confid-on enes mutual trust that in itself is one of the most superb Fruits of love."
Something of the early circum- stances in which Mrs. Clynes' mar riage flourished is refected in this i
"A day before my first baby. eame I baked bread enough to last a fortnight and cleaned the house thoroughly. Ten days after the birth of my son I was work- ing again because unless I did the work, no one else would.". Mr. Clyndi was then earning thirty shillings a week, and Mrs. Clynes was exceedingly happy."
no
a higher and a more deliberate standard of choice on the part of the woman," and that marriage has ever failed Or sucecciled but that this failure or success has been mainly engineer- od by the wife."
the morning of her wedding Mrs. Inge's mother said to her
day i
"To-day, God is putting into your hands the life of a good and great man, and it will be in your power to make or mar his life. Do your utmost to help him.in every way you can.
This was the path she followed, sharing, above all, bis intellectual interests. She concludes:-
even
"The wife who cannot accept or demand a consideration equal to that which she gives. jeopardisos gravely the love that the give-and-take of marriage should stimulato and develop,
The Artist's Wife,
The Women's Fart. Lady D'Abernon believes that:- Mr. Munnings, as quoted by his "The majority of marriages in wils, says: The woman who can which the advice of parents or cook a chicken pie, who knows when wise friends has been taken, where to leave her husband to his own de- their opinions have been consult vices, but who comies when sho's ed, and in which there has been called, disappears when she it not friendship and liking between the wanted, who speaks when she's young people rather than the driv-spoken to-is the ideal wife for the ing and vory wearing emotion that artist, or, for that matter, all un- they call falling in love, are on fartonate mankind."

She thinks that one of the socrets of happy marsingo lies in
