The Yunnanese Attack.

From June 13 to June 17, the Yunnanese troops were seen to be approaching and gathering on the north bank of the river, and on the latter date the outposts of the Kwangsi troops were driven back with several casualties. After that date there was continual sniping at the city wall from the attacking troops from across the river.

In the meanwhile the Kwangsi forces had been strengthening the defences of the city, especially of that portion of the wall on the east side which had been broken down to admit of building materials being) taken into the city,
