WISDOM STAG AND THE ST. LEGER.
CHINESE-OWNED CANDIDATE STANDS BEST CHANCE IN TO-DAY'S PRINCIPAL' RACE.
TIPS AND SELECTIONS FOR PUNTERS.
[BY MORNING DEW."]
For the Tenth Extra Race Meet. 1 out to redeem themselves. Look ing, which takes place to-day, the out for them! Pickle made a sor- principai event is the St. Lager over | rowľal displný over the milo at the the mile and three-quarters. In last meeting, and although he is this race, although there are ton running at very comfortable entries, the starters are not likely to exceed four or five.
The favourite is undoubtedly Mr. Chan Tin Sion's Wisdom Stag, a pony which ran second to Diana Bay in the Derby at the Aanual Meeting this year. The animal is is good fettle, and will be in the capably hands of Mr. Frost. Look ing over the list of entrants it ap pears as if nothing would really extend this big Chinese-owned grey. It will be interesting to see how the timo will compare with the local record for the mile and three-quarters.established by Sitting Bull this year,
Peppermint is well faneed in some
quarters, and he is a much im proved animal, but he will have
to be very much better than his Annual Meeting form if he is going to upset Wisdom Stag.
King's Colour, another likely starter, is bound to find a good deal of support, especially since he will be ridden by Mr. da Roza, whose recent successen are still fresh in the minds of punters.
African Eve and Mike may also accept for this big race, but both ́éan bo confidently counted out of it. Mike may get a place, but the chances of African Eve are extreme by Jean.
Shek-O Handicap: "A" Class.
The programme for to-day opens with a sprint over six furlongs, and Ivo very good animals are down to carry only 1-10 pounds. It is quite
♫
| weight will not be such a favourite: to-day. He will have to put in a much better showing than he did a fortnight ago if he is going to win. The Tiger, also, is moving nicely nowadays and may get a place,
Hong Kong St. Logor. Over a mile and three-quarters this race should prove to be Wisdom Stag's, unless King's Colour or Peppermint should show surprising ly improved condition, which is not probable. The chances have been fully dealt with at the beginning of this article.
Fanling Plate.
I understand, Christmas Belle is
likely to be saddled for this event,
in which case he will be a hot favourite, and a very deserving favourite at that. Iron Blood is in
good condition and ought to be
very near it at the finish. Another good thing here is Teuchit. Shiny Pearl also has to be remembered, and although he disappointed in the **D" Class över six furlongs, he might redeem himself to-day.
Shek-O Handicap: "B" Olass. This race over six furlongs will enable Marquis Hall and Young Pretender to have it out. all over again. I should not be surprised if both were beaten. There are several candidates here running at comfortable weights, and these in-
clude Monterey Bay, Blue Heaven, and Four Clubs. I think one or the other of these will figure in the Pretender will be ridden by Mr. finish and may even win. Young
Heard.
Shok-O Handicap: "D" Class,
Osiris, after his beautiful win a
conceivable that one or the other of these may provide the winner, but I rather imagine the race will be run under 1 minute 30 acconde, in which case the winner should be among the higher weighted can- didates. Nationalist II. carries 108 pounds, but over six furlongs this though it will not be easy to beat weight should make no adds for Osiris if he repeats his performance the vanquisher of Zorhan, If he of October 23. Noukhail has only is hold back and Pride of Tsingtan! 149 pounds to carry, and since the
fortnight age, should have little dif- ficulty in accounting for this event. Sunning will be out to reverse the order of things and may do it,
distance suits him, he may turn up here. Grenadier is still, to my mind, on the heavy side, and at best will only get a place."
Shatin Handicap: "A" Olass.
is sent out, this pony should also just about do it. Windsor Stag will have to run at his best if he is going to contend for the honours nt all. His display at the last outing. If Nationalist does not start in when he finished on the wrong side the opening event, bo should win of the straight, makes one hesitate here. Spearmint is good for a place bet, and Carnival Eve, in view of to recommend his chances. Raya! his light impost, might get the re Flush if started here may prove to maining place. Windsor Stag also be the surprise packet. On the whole! Buy avoid the first race to start hero, in which case he will extend but hardly boat Nationalist.
I think Mr. da Roza's mount should win, with Royal Flush second and San Francisco occupying the re- maining place.
Shek-O Handicap: "O" Olass. The second race of the day, over the mile, should-owing to the weights-provide a thrilling finish in which the following may figure ;-- Mount Elburz, Piccy, Bridge Hall, Tonbridge and Christmas Belle. Ricey is at a comfortable weight and should be favourite. He will certainly give a good run to any of the others. Bridge Hall is in the pink of condition, and can be relied upon to give a good:
rna to-day. Christmas Belle is a doubtful atarior hera, and his chances of winning
good, over the mile aro not Mount Elburz may give us a repeti- tion of his runaway victory, and is well worth a bet each way. Piecy, Bridge Hall, and Mount Elburz are therefore, the candidatos with the best chances, though Tango is an- ather good, one to follow.
Bhatin Handicap: ̈“ B-"' Class. Over this mile and quartor race Poppercorn has the beat chance, and since Mr. Backhouse, who under atands this animal, will be in the addle, ho should be in at the death Monterey Bay, who ran Borond, 18. "SMC Francisco atirtie pumpsting is bound to make 4 good show and should backed, each way, Fifty: Fifty and Little Thunder have met with pindifferent success at the last
two mooling and will be, all.
