It used to be complained, by tourists visiting this port, that our policemen were deficient in their knowledge of English. The visitors referred, of

principally to SOUTAC the Chinese and Indian members of the force. The others talk English quite well-or at least as well as their Kiltie or Celtic origin will permit. But instead of anding policemen stolidly dumb, it seems ilat visitors to the port are likely to get a shock if they attempt to engage in spritely conversation with some members of the forge. I see by the papers that an Indian con- stable has got into serious trouble As a result of his top extensive knowledge of the English language, Or perhaps I should say, as a re sult of making excessive use of hisor "blankety," or linguistic abilities.

Besides, it's not fair. The police 11311 has been fined twenty-five bucks for saying something to some body which some of us may be say ing ourselves one of these days to somebody who annoys us. Is it fair that we should ran the risk of being mulet in a handful of dollars for using a word which we did and do not know is verboten 1 Suppose I say to the Editor:-"Yon blighter, are you blind?" Precisely what it was the PC. said the newspapers did not tell us. That's the worst of thero Editors. When their infernal blue pencils get to work they knock all the joy out of life! All we are told of the policeman's observation is that he You are you blind?' Now, what is the missing word! What is the missing word? The Balls!

A little while ago the Editor wrote an article about the English and/or British Army, in which he showed that most of the men in the Soots regiments cane from Sussex, and most of the Welchmen from Whitechapel. I thick that was the gist of it all, as far as I remember. Well, anyway, here is a little story which has a bearing on the subject. A Scot called an Englishman to necount, as Scots will, for having referred to the English Army. "British Army, if you please," he insisted.

Later in the evening. when the two were getting merry together with some other congenial souls, the Scot suggested that the Englishman sing a song.
