QUESTIONS FOR SANITARY

BOARD.

At the meeting of the Sanitary Board this afternoon, letters to and

are being put into rehearsal, it is wishes to acknowledge with thankstor of Medical and Sanitary Ser

a case of now or never for the chorus girls, or they may be strand- ed through the winter.

The greatest difficulty with which they have to contend is compot tion, for the supply is very much greater than the demand. When over a musical show is being put on, a series of chorus auditions are held, at each of which there may be anything up to four hundr- ed applicants, and rarely more than sixty places to be filled alto- gother. Cards of admission have to be produced at these auditions, otherwise, presumably, the manage. ment would have to deal with hundreda more girls. These cards are obtained through agencies which are in touch with the man- agement, or direct from the mari- agemont themselves. Sometimes, if a girl is pretty enough, or cun- ning enough, she may force her way into an audition without, a card, but it doponds on the, strict- ness of the management whether she will be heard or not.

The Audition Ordeal. With a sinking heart a girl turns up at the stage-door of the theatro where the audition, is being held, and looks round at the smart-cok- ing, self-confident crowd already ngsembled there. They are probab y all just as nervous as she is her- self, but it is the thing to look successful and not over-anxious, and this most of them maninge to da. It is n grent relief to lina a Inmiliar face and have someone to talk to during the lengthy waits which are bound to occur. When the appointed time arrives, or sometimes considerably after, the crowd, is shepherded on to the stage. The footlights are generally on, and a few of the toplights. All the old hands produce make up, and, standing about in the wings, prop up little mirrors among the 'sconery; and put a, enough to 'pre- vent the lighting from taking all colour and significance out of their facts. They know that first appear- ances are half the battle. Same girls bring quite elaborate evening
