According to statistics compiled by the Canton Municipality, there were 301 new shops oponed during July and 200 closed.
The market for woollen, is weak on account of the high prices caus ed by the exchange, and merchants are reluctant to place large ordem.
The cotton yarn market is slack and prives are low. According to n Shanghai telogram, quotations there have risen by a dollar per
bale.
The flour market is lifeless on account of luck of demand, coupl ed with large arrivals and over- stocks. The price has dropped by six cents per bag.

The export trade to the United States has been greatly affected by the increased import customs duties there. There has been a decrease in Chinese goods sent to America.

The exchange rate for Hong Kong currency has been high re ently and is expected to remain eo for the time boing. The current tato is 81.33 Canton to 81 Hong Kong
Some 39,710 tons of foreign coul were imported into the city during Inst month, showing a decrease of
25 tons over the preceding month Demand was short throughout the month and prices were low.
