New York City is in the midst of a series of grave municipal scandals which may have important politics! effects. In several departments of the City government official in- vestigations in recent months have shown bribery and corruption, and a number of persons have been re- moved from responsible positions, some also having been indicted and a few eentonood to prison.
The latest of these scandals is also one of the most scrions. It is alleged that a municipal magistrate, Mr. George F. Ewald, bought his Beat on the bench, paying some £2,000 for it. Bank records show that a similar um passed at the sama date through the hands of twa important figures in the municipal administration, who are also con nected with Tammany Hall, the un- official society within the Demo cratic party that rules New York, and has done so almost consecutive ly for a hundred years. The Mayor, Mr. James A. Walker, and dr. George W. Olvany, former leader of Tammany, yesterday appeared before the District Attorney, and

REMARKABLE SCENES IN
LONDON.
Romarkable scones were witnessed when .. the. Sultan of Johore and Mrs. Helon Wilson were mar- riod at the Prince's Row Register Offico on October 15. Following the publicity given to the n- noungemont of the wedding by the London newspapers, a huge crowd gathered outside the offico. and police reinforcements had to be called. An attempt to rush the doors was checked with difficulty.
The Sultan was challenged when' he arrived, and answered, "I am the bridegroom." Mrs. Wilson wore a dark-rod costume trimmed with fur.
After the ceremony the police had difficulty in keeping back the crowd when the Sultan loft with his bride. They proceeded to Gros- Fenor House, where a luncheon party, at which six guests were present, was held.
In the afternoon thoy went to the Mosque at Woking, where religious ceremony was hold.

The Sultan stated that the honey. roon would probably be spent on the Continent, after which he would return to Johore, with his bride.
Mrs. Wilson, who is 40 years of ago, was formerly the wife of Dr." Brockie Wilson, whom sho' divore- ed. Tho Sultan is 57.
