British radio valve manufacturers ure optical regarding the practi cal value of À valve without a Jinment. It is stated that at the Berlin Wireless Exhibiiona re reiver using such valves reproduced broadcast programmes at loud. speaker strength. The lamontless valvo requires no low tension ac cumulator, and is operated by re flected light, as it contains a cell which is sunsitive to light and crits an electron stream whenever Eight fulla upon it.

A representative of any of the largest British firma making and "The non- using valves states: Ement, lamp is known as a scien-. tific fact, but we have not yet heard of its practical use. The maximum efficiency that we know to be ob tained is 250 micro amps, und that was reached with an intenso light on the cathodes. That would not give nearly enough power to drive 4 loudspeaker. In any case I do not see the practical use. You might do away with the low ten- sion accumulator, but you would still have to have high tension."

Another expert said: Tho Americans made a valve like, this five or six years ago. It was called the Sodion valve, but it did not prove a success owing to the lack of strength. It was only used as

detector."

"THE TALK OF HOLLY-" WOOD."

Most motion pictures since they hegan to talk are built and not written. True, they must have a story for the base, but it is usually sketchy, and is buile up, as the "shooting" of the picture pro

gresses. This is especially true of musical pictures like "The Talk of Hollywood," now showing at the Majestic Theatre, Kowloon,

When Harry H. Thomas and Samuel Zierler started out to make the picture, they only had an idea, Realising that pictures which relied on hack-stage, themen had been a success, they decided that one show. ing what goes on in the studios during the making of a talking picture ought to prove interesting. Starting with a mern iden, they secured Nat Carr, famous comedian. of the Broadway stage and sredu, n their star, and told him what they wanted. Carr, said he would write the story and did. But the story was not enough. There had to be musien numbers, dances, and a leading lady who could both sing and dance.

This resulted in the engaging of Fay Marbe, famous international stage beauty, who was assigned to the lending feminine role, and was assisted by the famous Leonida Ballet and Al Goodman's "Follow Thru' Orchestra.
