The experimental flight to India of the British airship R.101 was terminated by a terrible calamity which befell the giant craft when over Beauvais six hours after starting from Carding- ton, the vessel being hurled to the ground by a violent gust of wind, resulting in a terrifio explosion and an outbreak of fire which reduced the huge hull to a skeleton.

Of the 4 passengers and crew on board, only eight have been saved, the remaining 40 passengers and crew being incinérated.

Among the distinguished company of aviation officials on board the, craft were:-Air‹ Minister, Lord Thomson; Director of Civil Aviation,, Sir Sefton Bravoker; .Squadron. Leader Paistra, of the Royal Australian Air Force; the designer of the R101, Colonel Richmond; Wing Commander Colmare, Major Scott, Flight Licut. A survivor, an engineer named Leach, interviewed by Reuter, said:"At the time of the acci dent, everybody was asleep, except the watch and the pilot. At that moment an explosion occurred."
