How far such extensive rebuild- ing is worth the money which it costs is a moot point. It is signi ficant that in the case of the Utah, Florida and Wyoming, modernisa tion has not prevented the ships being scrapped under the London Naval Treaty.

Sing Sing Prison authorities re- 'cently recommended for pardon four conviot who saved two, nien and their wives from drowning in the Hudson River in front of the prison.
Two thousand prisoners wereTM amusing themselves in the recron. Lion ground, of the prison when. it was noticed that a small rowing. boat on the river was beginning, to sink.
Four prisoners. immediately volunteered to go to the rescue, and there was great excitement as the chief warder opened the prison gatos and let them out..
They immediately dived into the rivér and succeeded in bringing the occupants of the boat nshore.
One of the men in the boat was the chief of the New York. Central Kailway.
Three year ago there was a ress outcry when three young men Fadson River just outside the prison because the warders rofused to open the gates and allow some of the prisoners to go to their help.

Fram France demand has been very poor, there also prices offer- ed are low and it is impossible to: rell unless in speculation. Brokens have followed the drop.
