THE HINDENBURG LETTER.
STRON COMMENT BY POLISH PRESS.
Warsaw, Sept. 13. The Press comments most strongly on the After a period of three weeks memories which Marshal YOU during which ships of all dags have Hindenburg seat to the various been fred on above Wusuch on the Ministers of the Reich in 1919 on Yangtze, HMS. Stormcloud has the subject of the establishment of had the opportunity to come, into a neutral ione between Prussia and netion and do considerable damage, Poland, which was recently publish. This occurred on September 9, anded by Ze Soir at Brussels. the following reports were made by the master of the Kungwo of the Indo-China S.N. Co. During the engagement the Stormcloud was hit six times, but managed to silence five guns.
The Kungwo was coming down river from Hankow and below Kichow gun-fire was noticed from the right bank of the river, and apparently: directed at the ship This continued at irregular inter- vals until the ship had nearly reach- ed Have Rocks at 4.30 am.
Here heavy rifledve was opened or the ship, which was returned by the naval guard at 400 yards range, whereupon the firing ceased. It was renewed, however, at the Nan- yang Maru, which was following not far behind the Kungwe.
Enter the Stormcloud.
Half an hour later, the Kungwo met the Stormcloud five miles above- Wusteh, and the shooting was re- ported by signal. The Storméloud immediately made off up river, and engaged the gurs.
Judging from reports the Storm cloud then proceeded to carry out a little action sad took tea with the bandit gunners in no uncertain manner. Sixty rounds of 4-inch high-explosive were fired, which denclished tea houses, silenced five feld guns and did a great deal of damage besides. During the action the Stormcloud was hit six times, but there was little damage. Then the ship turned back down river, and in the afternoon came up with the Kungwo and reported what had happened
Trap
for All Steamers.
This particular locality, Kichow, Havoc Rocks and Wusteh, is about in the middle of the run from Kizkinng to Hankow. For the past three weeks Communist- bandits have been firing "indis- criminately at all ships, fortunately without much damage, but the gunboats have on several occasions missed their opportunity of reply- ing, to them. These guns are a serious menace, as a lucky shell s the effect of dis- may easily h abling or sinking a ship.
The Kungwo was also fired on heavily on its trip up to Hankow, when it was carrying over 60 pas- sengers. The Kutwo has been fred on, as have the Shengking and the Woosung, while a Sad Peh steamer carrying Government troops has also received a share of these un- welcome attentions, having part of its funnel carried away.
A Double Quimination.
On this occasion, however, a destroyer was lying handy, and got into action before the bandits had the time or opportunity to carry out their usual habit of going into retreat while war vessels pass by. The Stormcloud was quickly on the job and cleaned out the bandits fairly thoroughly.
Gunboats and destroyers have op several occasions in the past few years been faced with the necessity of coming into action on the Yang- teze in protection of mercantile shipping, and this latest episode is the culmination of a three weeks campaign waged by the bandits sgainst riverine vessels of ali nationalities. g
