During the week the Arsenal gained two successes, their latest being at Sunderland. They are the only unbeaten team still ro maining in the First Division, as Aston Villa were deprived of." one point by the Wanderers. Playing away, Newcastle United scored seven goals to four against Manchester United.

The close run of three teams at the top of the Second Division was broken, as Everton took the lead by accounting for, West Bromwich Albion, while Bury were beaten at Swansea. Burn- ley gave a surprising glimpse of their own form by beating Read- ing by eight goals to one.
