SIR WALTER DE FRECE, M.P.

NOT TO STAND. AT NEXT GENERAL ELECTION.

The definite decision of Sir Wal- ter. de Frece, M.P., to retire from politics at the next geceral elec. tion was officially notified to a special meeting of the executive committee of the Blackpool Con- servative Association last, month,

In a letter to the association Sir Walter explained that owing to the liness of Lady de Frece, which necessitated her spending at least tix months of each year abroad, he did not feel that he could give adequate attention to his Parlia mentary duties, and he was com- peled, in consequence, to give up the idea of standing for Parliament again.

A resolution of thanks" to Sir Walter for his services and regret that he found it necessary to re-

ire was passed.

Nothing was done with regard to the selection of a new candidate, but there is a strong possibility that the one chosen will be a local

NEW YORK SOCIETY STARTLED.

GIRL'S MIDNIGHT WEDDING TO BROKER'S CLERK.

A romantic story of how wealthy New York society début ante, Miss Marjorie Mairs, jilted the son of a distinguished Dutch diplomat in order to elope with a broker's clerk came to light re cently.

In September last year the en gagement was announced of Mrs. Olney B. Maire' daughter Marjorie to M. Daniel François Marie Hubrecht, son of Dr. Jan Hubrecht, sometime Counsellor of the Dutch Legation in London and later Dutch Ambassador to Brazil. The marriage was to have taken place in the spring of this year; but on June 20, Miss Mairs eloped with Mr. Martin Henry, of South Bend, Indiana, who is employed in.a, Wall Street brokerage-house Young M. Hubrecht is now a student at Cam bridge University, and Mise Mairs states that after her surprise wed ding she sent him a cable inform ing him of the event...

The news of this startling romance is confirmed by the Town Clerk of Harrison, New York, who described how the young couple and a party of friends turned him out of bed in the middle of the night to perform the ceremony.

The parents of the bride, who belong to one of the oldest families to have the marriage annulled.
