JAPAN'S SHIPPING

EARNINGS.

DROP OF 40,000,000 YEN ANTICIPATED.

GOVERNMENT SCHEME FOR A. SUBSIDY,

The year's shipping freight in- come for Japan is expected to de- cline by Y40,000,000 from last year to about .80,000.000, due to the Half of this will be collected by the universal economic depression. Nippon Yusen Kaisha and Osaka Shosen Kaisha and the remaining amoung by tramp freighters,

The shipping busines, slump has engulfed many Japanese tramp shipping concerns and even such in- fluential shipowners as the Yama- shita Steamship, Taiyo... Kalun Kaisha and several others are 10 an awkward position, says the Japan Advertiker.

Reasons for Subsidy.

The Minstry of Communications has been studying this situation. connection is how to increase the One of the principal objects of the frieght income. It is reported they. have drafted a plan to give a ship- ping subsidy of Y.,000,000 a year to tramp ships engaged in over-

Das ervices.

Accordinging to the plan, the subsidy will be given to such ships as engage in fixed freight services carrying fairly large cargoes. The subsidy is less than 20 sen a ton for a trip of 1,000 miles The near- sez services are excluded from the subsidy. The gross tonnage of ships must be more than 4,000 tons gross cach and thoir age less than 15 years.

The period of subsidization is two years. The payment of Y.5,000,000 at this time when the financial depression is intense is considered difficult. but MT Koizumi, Minister of Communica tions. Mr. Nakano and Mr. Imaida, respective parliamentary and administrativo vice-ministers, are making strenuous efforts to re- alize the plan, for it aims at yield- ing annual freights of Y.40,000,000 giving the hounty of Y.5,000,000. to about 1,000,000 tons of ships.

Such large shipowners a the Kokusai Kisen Kaisha, the Kawa- saki Steamship, the Taiyo Kálun Kaisha, the Yamashita Steamshin and others will be favourably affected directly, if the plan ma- terializes. Even a shipower having but one ship will be entitled to the subsidy if he offers if for char ter to large shipowners.

The

Ishiwara Industry Co., which is engaged in the transporta- tion of mineral ores from Jobore to the Government Steel Works at Edamitsu, Yawatd, has entered into contract with the Kokusai Kisen Kaishr. for the purchase of four ships and with the Kawasaki Steamship Co. for two ships for shipment of ores.

The Kokusai Kisen Kaisha ships are the Milan Maru, 6,784 tons. built in 1920, the Erie Maru, 8,718 tons, built in 1920, the Malta Maru, 8,727 tons, built in 1919, and the Boston Maru, 8,717. tons, built in 1919. The Kawasaki Steamship Co.'s two ships are the Pacific Maru. 8,038 tons, built in 1920, and the Victoria Maru, 9,000 tons, built in 1921.

The average purchase price is said to be about Y.50 a ton. On buying these five ships of 60,000 tons the Ishiwara Industry Co. will scrap the Kinsen Maru! 7,205 tons, built in 1903, the Malay Märu, 100 tons, built in 1906, and the Ginsen Maru, 6,690 tons, built in 1907.
