The outlook for silver is discussed by Mr. W F. Spalding in the curi rons isrue of World Trade, the quar- terly journal of the International Chamber of Commerce, and from this article it is difficult to derive' any very strong grounds for hoping: || 31,495 | 31,440|| that prices will be substantially higher in the near future.

Mr. Spalding, however," puts forward one or two suggestions

which must be borne in mind. He refers to the use of silver in the manufacture of films, stating that although this is likely to become of increased importance, it can hardly yet prove a factor to com- ponsate for the falling off in de-

It is also suggested that Euro- pean and other nations will, under their coinage laws, begin the long- awaited mining of silver sub- sidiary coins, and this should cause an increase in the demand. HONG KONG BANKS-I heard of several small lots which changed Trands at $1,430 to $1,440, and think there are still buyers in the market at about these figures:

*

UNION INSURANCE-There is n. small demand for Unions at 8440, at which figure, I hear, not a few shares have changed hands.

CHINA UNDERWRITERS-DT- ing the week several large parcels of shares were sold at $2.50, and there appear to be buyers in the market at this figure. Sellers are Holding out for a little more. fancy 82.58 might lead to business.

CHINA FIRES-There is quite a demand for this share at quota- tions, but sellers are difficult to locate. The same remarks apply So the case of Hong Kong Fires.,

DOUGLASES There are buyers at $26.50, and as far as I can as- certain sellers are not falling over each other to get out at this rate, Probably more will have to be paid before further sales will take place.

STAR FERRIES--This stock is very steady, with buyers offering $33.

*

HONG KONG HOTELS-There is a sight improvement in this stock, and sales were negotiated during the week at from $10.40 to: 810.60, the market closing firm with buyers at the latter figure..

"

HONG KONG LANDS-The de- mand for these abares slackened somewhat during the week, and at the close there were buyers in the market who were offering only $77.50, cum rights.

*

HONG KONG REALTIES The week saw buyers reducing their price gradually until at the close only 89 was offered.

HUMPHREYSI heard of a' couple of hundred shares changing hands at $15.40, but doubt whether further business can be done at this. figure, as there seem to be quite a few sellers.in the market

EWOS-Locally quite a number. of Ewes were sold at Tls 12 to Tis. 19.25, but in Shanghai the rate, I hear, went as high as Tls. 12.60 This undoubtedly is due to the "shorts" covering their settlement position. It would be interesting to see whether the demand for shares is kept up for the Septem ber Settlement.:

CHINA LIGHTS-A fair busi nese was done in these shares at rates varying between $23.45 to $24.25, and the market closed firm with a very steady undertone.
