HONG KONG SHARES.
BENJAMIN & POTTS' WEEKLY REPORT.
Business in our local market during the past week has been moderately active and has largely consisted of transactions to level up the forthcoming Settlement on Tuesday week. Although there has beca no material alteration in prices, there has been more inclina, tion to buy at the quotations now Tuling for "most "stocks and the
market closes with a firmer under-
tone.
Banks Hong Kong and Shang- hai Banks in sympathy with the fall in the London price to. £100.10 (Middle) have weakened to $1,430 at which figure sales were made.
Marine and Fire Insurances.-- Unions have fluctuated between $435 and $440. Underwriters were negotiated at 89 and close with buyers at 82.63.

Steamships Sbipping. Douglas were active and, finished up with buyers at 827. Steamboats fetched $25. Waterboats at $32. continue neglected.
Transports "Shell" closed appreciably higher at 97/6. Docks, Wharves and Godowns Kowloon Wharves are still on the weak side and can probably be had elow the quoted rate 8164. China Providents after being booked at $5 have been dealt in at $3.20. Whampoa Docks are quiet, but steady at $39. Shanghai Docks can be placed at the improved price of T 119. Hongkey Wharves are unchanged with buyers at Tls. 260,
Lands. Hotels and Buildings.- There are enquiries for Hong Kong. ard Shanghai Hotels at $10.50.. Realtys have eased off to $9.30. Humphreys Estates are obtainable at $16. Hong Kong Lands are on offer at 878 and the Rights at 813. Shanghai Lands are quoted Tis. 297 nominal.
Public Utilities-Hong Kong Eléctrics were realised again at $77. China Lights (Old) were dealt in at the outset at 893.60 with buyers now offering 824, and no sellers in evidence. Hong Kong Trams were done at 818,40 and continue in demand. Peak Trams (Old) are wanted at 812. Tele- phones have strengthened and can be placed at 833 and $224, for the fully paid and partly paid shares respectively.."Star Ferries have lapsed to a nominal quotation of 885.
Miscellaneous,
Green Island Cements (Combined) were negotiat ed at 817 and more can be placed at the close at the improved price at $17.90. Hong Kong Ropes have receded to $10.80. Dairy Farme have been in good demand and were booked at various rates up to 8952- China Sugars are wanted at 81.15. Hong Kong Government Loan changed hands at 8/3 per cent, premium
Cotton Mills-Ewos have frmed up and the latest quotation from Shagnghai makes them Tls. 122 buyers. Shanghai Cottons have advanced to Tls, 83.
Rubbers. Plantation Rubber is alightly lower being quoted at 4.15/10d. per 1b, and the following are the latest cabled quotations re- ceived from Shanghai:-

This demand from France is due probably to the news received from America about the eventual corn crop deficiency.
From foreign countries no eo- quiries have been received, and we did not hear of any business being closed, though it was rumoured that Java. buyers were not very far from our prices.
Brokers have followed the rice,. inasmuch as stocks are not large.
Market closes arm with few sellers at the following prices :-

No Japan 40 per cent.-191 tranca per 100 ks. 7.55 guilders per Java pikol: 6.20 yen per picul; 10/6 shilling per cwt.
Brokens 1 and 2-117. fades per 100 ks 7.20 guilders per Java pikol; 5.9 yer per picul: 9/11 shilling per cwt.

Paddy Prices went up, expect- ing a good demand for rice, and arrivals are more and more scarce.

EMPLOYERS REFUSE TO 'INCREASE SALARIES.

LILLE, August 21. Following the arrival of the Minister of Labour, the strikes which broke out on August 14 are ending, and the textile mills and metal works are resuming.
The Employers' Federation states that there will be no increase of wages. and deductions will be made from salaries to the account
of social insurance in accordance with the new Law in connection with which the strike occurred.
