it is fatal to bowl a short length at him. Yet, so far, that is the mistake the English bowlers have made against Bradman. Frankly they have not stood up" to his punishment. Flattered by everyday batsmanship (right foot rooted be- hind the crease) English bowling has wilted at the sight of a bat that is busy and resolute; hence an attempt to take refuge in short

Bradman has thrived on bowling to be seen than his pull and leg which he has been at liberty to see bit. The secret of his stroke-power all the way, to see pitch yards in lies in his ability to move quickly front of him. FOURTH GOSPEL
AUTHORSHIP.
DOUBTS RAISED BY FIND OF MANUSCRIPT.
A discovery relating to the au- thorship of the Fourth Gospel, which may have far reaching re- sults, has been made by Dr. A. Oriental Mingana, Keeper of Manuscripts at the John Rylands Library, Manchester.
Hitherto it has been generally accepted that the Fourth Gospel was written by John the Apostle, although there has always beyn some doubt on the matter. Accord- ing to the evidence which Dr, Min gana sets out in th eLibrary Bul letin, the author of the Fourth Gospel was no John the Apostle, bat one of his disciples, known as John the Younger.
"Dr. Mingana states that the Syriac manuscript, which contains those important statements, is re- latively modern, as it is dated Saturday, September 23, of the year 2000 of the Greeks (A.D. 1749), "but it is a faithful copy of a much older original which may be ascrib- ed to about A.D. 750. He arrives at this conclusion from the nature and character of the Massoretic signa that the copyist is reproduc- ing in his transcription.
Ephesus or Patmos.
This manuscript also challenges the tradition that the Fourth Gospel was written at Ephesus, or perhaps Patios, the island of the Apostle's banishment, on the eve of his return to Ephesus. In view of its statements, the possibility that it was written at Bithynia has to be considered. At the commence. ment, the following word; occur:

The appendices discovered by Dr. Mingana in his manuscript are, however, as he himself states, quite elsewhere. Mr. Jacob unknown Leveen, the Hebrew and Syriac scholar and Assistant Keeper of Oriental Manuscripts in the Bri- tish Museum, informed the Sun- day Time, recently that he had known for some time of Dr. Min- gana's theory, though he had not yet had an opportunity of seeing the manuscript or studing Dr. Mingana's personal account of it.
"From the photographs which I have seen of the pager in question," be said, "it is clear that the manu script is in an eighteenth century hand, and I am not quite sure to what Dr. Mingana is referring in ascribing it to an original of the early eighth century. In the re production which I have seen, the colophon quoted by Dr. Mingana appears in fainter type than the rest, and this may possibly have sume significance, Certainly it will require very strong evidence to convince scholars of the Gospel texts that an eighteenth century manuscript contains valuable new readings which had escaped the scribes of so many preceding con- turies
