THE BRIAND PLAN.
SOUTH AMERICAN APPROVAL.
Be Paris, August 13. - Foreign Minister Briand's Pan-European Fedoration scheme found somewhat belated praise outside Europe when the Brazilian and Cuban Govern- ments, unlike other extra-European States which had received copies of M. Briand's memorandum "for informatory purposes and merely notified the French Government of its receipt, replied at length, eulo giring the scheme, and the spirit of international co-operation em buing it.

Tilden was opposed by Clifford Sutter, who appeared to be lame. In his usual masterly fashion, the champion was laying a series of long and deep drives along the side- lines, and Sutter's efforts to dash. back and forth were a pathétic spectacle. Feeling that Tilden was playing upon his oponent's injury, the crowd broke into a chorus of jeers directed at Tilden.
The chamion walked to the net, shook hands with Sutter, and an- nounced that he was defaulting. "I've had enough of booing," he said.
One of the most colourful figures ever seem upon the courts, Tilden' has had frequent trouble with crowds and officials. He often questions decison, claiming points or alternatively presenting the next point to to an opponent. Part of his difficulty with the crowds is the familiar psychology in favour of the supposed under dog," and Tilden's long reign on the courts. has resulted in a general tendency to applaud his opponent in a way which "Big Bill", never enjoys.
