TAX FARMERS INCREASE COLLECTIONS.

[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.

Canton, August 17. The cattic slaughterers in Can- ton went on strike yesterday in protest against what they term the high-handed and unreasonable action of the Government tax farmers. These tax farmers are charged with cruelty, extortion and unnecessary disturbances to the dealers in native-made leather.

Heretofore raw hides were taxed according to their sizes. Thus one dollar was col·
