Thus far medical science has been unable to hold out any hope for these victims. The

paralysis is only partial, but the hands and feet are affected, so that the sufferers are unable to perform useful labour, and can walk only with great difficulty by using cruf ches..

It was thought at first that re distilled poisonous alcohol had been added to Jamaica ginger, but it is now considered that the so-called ginger roots,

which came from

Santo Domingo, were not genuine but another and poisonous variety of the plant. The victims are most numerous in the south and south west, and are almost entirely con- fined to the poorer classes. NO REAL RIGHT TO USE THE TITLE.

LONDON PUZZLE. ·

What legal title hos Sir William Waterlow to the prefix "Lord" Mayor of London?

This question by a correspondent was investigated by a Press repre. sentative with rather unlooked-for results.

Recent enactments have put the claims of other: Lord Mayors on a proper legal footing, but it appears that the Lord Mayor of London holde bis title without any definite prescription except tradition.

"Thomas Legge.

It has been alleged that Edward III. granted the prefix "Lord " in 1354, when, by the Charter of Maces, the Chief Magistrate was granted the honour of having macea carried before him by the sergeants Sir William Soulsby, so long associated with the Lord Mayors of London, admitted that he could not give "any details of claims to the title.

"I can tell you," he said, “who was the firet Mayor of London to use the title Lord Mayor. It was Thomas Legge, an ancestor of the present Earl of Dartmouth. I think it must have come from a courtesy title.!!

"My Lord the Mayor." The Librarian at the Guildhall said:

"The title probably arose because it was the custom for the mayor to be addressed as My Lord, the Mayor, and it may be that this was corrupted later into My Lord Mayor.

SPELLING REFORM IN GERMANY. THE ATTACK ON CAPITAL

The reform of German spelling is a tough problem, but it is making headway, slowly but surely. The reform is carried on,, along" three lines. This reform meets with the least opposition. Many scientific books have abolished superfluous capitals of recent years.

The third line of reform is the most radical and moet vehemently disputed Its aim is the abolition of all mute letters, especially those. which indicate the length of a vowl, in- mer and It writesser ?? stead of sebr" and "mehr," and "wi" and "spilen" instead of
