Mr. E. E. C. Thuraisingham ap. peared for the husband and the wife, Chan Chye Neo, was repre- sented by Mr. Claude da Silva.
Chew Cheng Swee stated that maintenance order was against him in favour of his wife and two child- ren in May, 1999, for $150 a month and he had paid this amount re- gularly until June, 1930. After that he was not. able to pay owing to hard times and changed circum stances. He now applied for a re-
daction.
In the course of cross-examina- tion by Mr. da Silva, Cheng Swee stated that his overdraft with the bank amounted to about $4,000 and he admitted having lent money to friends but he was not able to get it back. In one case he lent a busi ness friend $2,000 and was given #promissory note. His friend's business failed and he was not able to get back his money. During the

It has proved that one of his mandores (native supervisors of the labour-force) had a strong wish to become headmandore. He formed a plot with the woman cook and the boy of the manager to try it with witcheraft.
The intention was to have the manager eat something, which made him accessible to the wish of the mandere.
The consequence was that the manager and his wife became very sick and a physician had to be call- R. E. Johnson (as Steel Traveled to attend them. ler), H. McDermid, D. P. Tahilig

Replying to further questions, Cheng Swee said that he had in- creased the rent of some of his houses," in one case from 81 to 820. He had to do this because he was not making any profit on the houses, which cost a lot of money to keep in repair. He had to pay the hos- pital bill for his second wife and daughter. He had made no offer to meet the funeral expenses and doctors' bills of the child which died as he was not informed and he did Не not know anything about it. kept a car and paid $30 a month for the driver as he had to visit the lodging house business in town.
This business had since ceased, but be kept the car as he had to go to his plantation.
Mr. da Silva: But your wife has no car -She has estates and she can afford to keep three or four cars if she wants to.
His Honour: I don't want this sort of thing to go on like this. What offer does he make. 1
Your wife Mr. Thuraisingham: also belongs to a very wealthy Family 1-Yes.
She gets an allowance from her father's estates as well?—Yes.
The lodging house business was auctioned by the Sheriff-Yes.
His Honour: What offer can he make ?
Cheng Swee: I will give food and a house for her and daughter.
Arrangement Buggested.
Remarking that it was no good washing dirty linen in public, and that both the parties Felonged to wealthy and well-known families, his Honour suggested that Counsel should meet the Official Assignee and come to some arrangement. His, Honour said he would write to the Official Assignee.
Mr. da Silva pointed out that this would be irregular as the ap- plicant had to show the Court why he was not able to pay the amount, mentioned in the order. “We are not wealthy," added Counsel.
Mr. Thuraisingham said that although the applicant had not the means now he had a share in his father's estates which were worth. over four million dollars. The ap plicant's father had only allowed his sons. 8300 a month.
In these days of slump $150 a month is a very high sum, remark- ed Mr. Thuraisingham.
But he is not cutting down his expenses," Mr. de Silva interposed. Yes, he is pulling up expenses. He is giving up his concubine," his Honour replied. He had three concubines in May last and he has given them up. He is not now, in the same position as he was last year, he is down by 2300,
"
That is his story. I want to subpana the Official Assignee hure to get his reasons for reducing the allowance," Mr. da Bilve said.
His Honour pointed out to Mr. da Bilva that a letter from the Official Assignee was shown to him by Mr. Thuraisingham at the last mention of the case and said that the Official Assigned should have been in County to piepcred

THE POPE'S ILLNESS.
INTERNAL TUMOUR.
London, July 30.-The following statement has been communicated to one of the most prominent Roman Catholics in the country, who is in very close contact with the Vatican:-
"We learn on authority, which we cannot ignore, that the illness from which the Pope suffers is due to an internal tumdur.
"His Holiness gaily jests with bis physician on the unfavourable diag nosis and continues his work with- out interruption.
"He refuses to take rest, but in confidential ccclesiastical communi- ties prayers are more fervently re- cited for his welfare.
"The Pope places more reliance on prayer than on medical know- ledge.
