Not so many years ago the man who sported colourful socks was called 'a fop,' 'a dude,' 'a „kput.'« Now we realise these were brave pioneering spirits. They brought colour into hosiery, "and taught us all to be fastidious in the matter of socks. The lesson has been a good

CHINESE REVOLUTION
ISSUES.
A DELICATE PROBLEM.
[BY W.S.]
Collectors of the stamps of China appear to be much attracted to the issues of Yuan Shi Kai and Dr. Sun Yat-Sen. The historical facts leading to their introduction are
interesting, aud a better couTHE cannot be adopted than to quote
some of the notes of Gordon, A. Clayton, as contained in the S.G.M.J. for May, 1027,
During the last three decades the Chinese have realised how down- trodden they were by their Manchu rulers. Events mored swiftly since | 1909, culminating in the mutiny of te army at Wuching on October 11, 1911. An army was sent down to suppress the rebellion; but on the way down the Yangtze the soldiers heard of the mutiny at Wuchang, and mutinied in sym- pathy with their comrades
The Revolution.
After this the revolution spread rapidly: Hankow was captured and burned, and Hanyang with its arsenal was also taken. The various provinces south of the Yangtsze one by one seceded from the Empire and set up independent Governments. The Regent' induced Yuan Shi Rai, who had retired in 1908 to save his own head, to take up office again as Commander-in- Chief of the Army and Navy. Yuza recaptured Hankow and Hanyang before his funds ran out, and the Regent, being unable to effect a loan, was forced to come to terms with the revolutiodista.
