Mr. Herbert Morrison, the Minis ter of Transport, announced dur ing a debate on the Road Traffic Bill, in the House of Commons last month, that he will place Road Fund money at the disposal of the police to equip and maintain mo- tor-bicycles, or fast" motor-cars, for traffic vigilance.
Mr. Morrison had this shot in his locker. when he let the House decide by a free vote on the report stage of the Bill whether the twenty-miles-an-hour speed init
for motor-care carrying fewer than eight passengers should be abolish- ed, or whether a new epeed limit of thirty-five miles an hour, which Dr. Salter proposed, should be ad- opted.
Two Votes to One,
The House decided by two to ons that the speed limit should be abolished, Dr. Salter'e motion be ing defeated by 180 votes to 80, a majority of 81. "The Govern ments proposal to abolish the speed limit has been challenged at every stage of the Bill, but it is now certain that the speed limit will disappear.
