Driver's Theory.
The driver of the motor coach holds the theory that the man.în the, car, which was coming in, tho opposite direction, drew his revel ver because he thought the ap- proaching coach was taking up too much room on the road!
"It was on an awkward part of the road. four miles from Read- ing," said the driver, "and, owing to a lorry being drawn up at the side, I had to swing out into the centre. It probably looked as if
I was trying to baulk this chap, and I suppose no one could blame him for getting a bit annoyed if he didn't understand what was in the way,
"It is very unpleasant to think on, though, if every motorist who göt annoyed with motor-coaches shot at them as he went by
Girl Faints.
Women passengers in the motor coach who heard the report" and saw the driver duck as the glass splintered, screamed with fright and one girl fainted.
Several people sitting in the front seats saw the car approach- ing and in statements to the police said that it was a brown fabric 20, Des YvX ROAD WEST, TEL 99979 saloon with sun roof folded back.

CONSULAR SERVICE HOPES "AND FEARS;
When Sir Hubert Montgomery, Assistant Under-Secretary of State in the Foreign Office, was giving evidence regarding the Consular Bervice before the Royal Commis sion on Civil Service in London, he was asked by Lord Tomlin why all Diplomatic and Consular Services were reserved for men...
Sir Hubert replied that so far as the Diplomatic Services were con parned women would be unable to get on broner terms with foreign officials,
Women were also hardly likely to bo useful in the Consular Service owing to the fact that many of
often called out to settle disputes, and when stationed at ports they had to deal with sailors who were not always sober, and who were hikely to become abusive. (Laugh- ter.)
Lord Tomlin: It is an Irish woman who is Chilean Vice-Consul at New York.
The Ambassadress,
If women were allowed in the Diplomatic and Consular Services and were permitted to get married, Sir Hubert pointed out, their hus- bands could not carry on any busi Dess occupation at the post where they were appointed.
Lord Tomlin: That would mean that the unfortunate Ambassadress would have her husband hanging about the house all day (Laugh ter.).
ed to Sir Hubert that if the women in foreign countries had been given Consular and Diplomatic posts, British women ought to have a chance. She thought that the ex- those posts were unhealthy and periment ought to be tried in one- dangerous. These officers were or two places, at least.
Three men and a girl were inside, but it was the man at the whee! who stood up and fired.
of
A piece of glass, about the size farthing, was broken out of the windscreen of the charabanc and this fell on the driver's hand and cut a gash in his thumb.
In Reading police were inform ed of the incident and full details given.

Did Not Dare Stop.
The driver of the couch said by did not dare to stop after the shot Was fired.
"I put my head down and my foot down," he said, "and went hard out for Reading. I was not risking a second shat, although passengers at the back tell me that the saloon car drove on at a tre- merdous speed,, and evidently was
about bothering
shooting
not
again."
