RETRENCHMENT HINT AT FINANCE TURNING POINT IN CANTON'S ANTI-

COMMITTEE MEETING.

MR. BRAGA OPPOSES EXPENDITURE ON CENTRAL BRITISH SCHOOL.

GOVERNMENT

FORESHADOWS, NEW SCHOOL IN 1933.

Some very pointed criticisms of the inactivity of the Government in their work of pushing on the erection of the new Central British School in Kowloon were made by the Hon. Mr. J. P. Braga at the meeting of the Finance Committee yesterday. The criticism arose following a request from the Government for $8,000 to carry out certain work in the Central British School. Mr. Braga pointed out that religious and private enterprises were making rapid progress with the building of modern schools and colleges.

ti

He described the premises that housed the present Central British School as a dilapidated structure and urged that the Government spend no more money on it unless it was absolutely necessary.

י,

The Director of Public Works. in answer to a question by the Hon. Mr. Owen Hughes, stated that the new Central British School in Kowloon will probably be ready in 1933, but much depended on the sum that will be voted for this work.

Other interesting items also came up for discussion, all of which are fully reported below.

These con stantly recurring items for patch. ing up dilapidated buildings, such as the Central British School, can easily be avoided.
