The number of under trial and convicted persons of Peshawar District connected with the recent agitation who have been released on giving satisfactory undertakings for the future now exceeds 180. POLITICAL CHANGE ́ ́IN

AMERICA,

MR. C. HUSTON RESIGNS.

UNITED PREBS.]

Waalrington, July 24. Mr. .Claudius Huston, Chairman of the Republican National Committee, announced to-day that he will re- sign his committee chairmanship on "August. 7.

This move set at rest rumours which have been circulating for many weeks, to the considerable embarrasment of the Administra- tion. Because of apparently well- substantiated stories of irregulari- ties in handling campaign funds, Mr. Huston's resignation was ex- pected some time ago, and it was felt that if it did not come before. long, President Hoover would be compelled to ask for it.

No intimation has been given out as ret concerning a successor in the chairmanship.

were

...

When Mr. Huston's activities Senatorial aired before a Committee during the regular, sea- sion of Congress, an effort was made by certain elements to danb Mr. John J. Raskob, Democratic chairman, with the same brand of tar through allegations that he had contributed of bly porconal dantuna "to defeat "dry" Democrats because

of Iris Owawet paintek

The general result of the scandal- mongering, however, was to im plant a firm conviction in the mind of the public that Mr. Huston had outlived his usefulness, in his capacity of chairman Since that time the chief uncertainty was the date of his resignation.
