it very often happens that after a car has been washed the brakes prove to be ineffective, and the best way to dry them is to drive at about 25 mp.h. with the brakes slightly applied. The friction thus set up soon dries the film of water cover- ing the brakes.

Death of Mr. F. R. Smith.

His many friends will learn with regres of the death of Mr. F. R. Smith, chief engineer of Armstrong Siddeley Motors, Led. Motor House Chocks.

Carages are still modern conveni ences often produced by builders with little specialised experience; and for this reason many garages are built only just big enough to hold the car for which they are in- tended. This being so, great care is called for when the car is garaged to see that the front wings do not foul the back wall of the garage.. If, however, a fairly thick, block of wood is nailed to the floor of such a height that the wheels cannot ran over it, and in a posi- tion to stop the car with the wings just clear of the wall, the car may then be driven slowly into the garage without any risk of damag ing the wings.

Water in the Brake Drums.

A few, even modern, "cars are 6tted with brakes which refuse to

work when there is any water lying. on the road. This dificulty may be overcome by drilling two or three mm. holes in the brake drums, thus allowing the water to fly out its trap by the movement of the wheel.

Further Fuel Supplies.

National Benzale Association, in his address dutlined the progress which had been made in the production of benzole during recent gear. Remarkable Growth.

According to official State regis. tration figures, at the close of 1920 the total number of private cars in use in the United States was 2,580,701, of which, incidentally, 6,350,901 were of General Motors manufacture. "In this connection it is interesting that ten years, ago there were only 8,471,000 private cars of all makes in use in the coun- try.

Door Hinges.

On an elderly car it very often happens that the door hinges wear and rattle. The usual method of curing this is to remove the pins of the hinges and to fit oversize pins, having reamed out the hole to fit. A more simple method is to remove the pins and to bend them slightly before replacing. Although this may make the door a little stiff at first, it will at least remove all

trace of rattle.

Wheel Changing.

Few things are more annoying. than to find, on experiencing a puncture, that the defaulting wheel is rasted firmly and immovably tổ its hub. Although it may seem an unnecessary precaution it is well worth while occasionally jacking up the wheels in turn, removing them, and slightly oiling the hub. The opportunity may also be taken to change aver front and rear wheels with the object of equalising tyre

wear.

The Drip Pan,

Nearly every moderh private garage is fitted with a pan to pre-" vent the oil and petrol from the engine dripping on to the concrete floor, but very few motorists trouble to keep it clean. Should this pan be allowed to fill with petrol there is always a danger of fire if the engine. should backare. Therefore, when cleaning the car, clean also the drip pan and preferably sprinkle a little sand or earth in the pan before replacing it under

the car.

Nuts and Spanners.

Jacr.

A golden rule for mechanics is alwaysTap a fixed spanner, but not an adjustable one with a ham- Never, however, should the blows become more than taps. Many people, when unable to undo a nut place a piece of piping over the free end of the spanner, thus lengthening the leverage available. This is not advisable, for too often does it result in the head of the bolt being twisted off. This why small spänners are shorter than the bigger ones. A small bolt must not receive the same amount of force that a larger bolt would require."
