GOSSIP FROM THE SHARE-MARKET.
PRICES DROPPING STEADILY PRIOR TO JULY SETTLEMENT,
FREE ADVICE FOR INVESTORS.
[BY KUFAN.”]
Gosip often mores the market, but no investor should either buy or sell on market gossip only.
A steady fall in prices in most stocks characterised business on the Rialto for the week under re- view. The market has been quite active, but prices continue to drop. Forward business has been record ed on a large scale.
The July settlement, though a heavy one, is not expected to create so since any difficulty, "the more there has been a steady drop in prices for the past few weeks.. The fall has been both slow and gradual," with the result that no one is seri- ously caught,
The concensus of opinion is that there is little hope of any im provement in the market until the A September settlement is over. "few isolated rises will be undoubt. edly registered, but this can be put down without hesitation to mani- pulations of speculators rather than to any legitimate cause.
Money is still plentiful, but reak less buying appears to have stopped or the time being. The steadier tone which now prevails is much more, healthy than the rapid rises reported in recent months,
*
HONG KONG BANKS There were a few small buyers of Bank shares at $1,515, but so far as can be ascertained little or no business was done in these shares during the week.
UNION INSURANCES were handled in small parcels at 8433 to $440. At these figures there are
number of sellers in the market.
*
CHINA UNDERWRITERS are wanted at $2.70, but there are no shares offering in the market and buyers will have to come up.in their ideas.
•
CANTON INSURANCES, CHINA FIRES and HONG KONG FIRES are all inquired for at market rates.
+
DOUGLASES appear to be s little stronger at the moment, and there are buyers in the. market. at
$93. No business, it would appear, has been recorded.
STEAMBOATS-After their drop the previous week these shares re- covered somewhat, and there were buyers asking for shares at $23.60.
+
STAR FERRIES are wanted at $66 and even at this price are hard to get.
HONG KONG & KOWLOON WHARVES These shares appear to be on the easy side, with shares offering at $168. During the rast week sales were recorded at this Tate, and I think a little lower figure might be seen this week.
+
HONG KONG & WHAMPOA DOCKS improved to a buying rate of 830 during the week, and one. or two small parcels changed hands at this figure.
HONG KONG & SHANGHAI HOTELS are on the easy side, with sellers at $11.95. Quite a large number of shares were sold at rates varying between $11 and 311.20 during the period under review,
*
HONG KONG LANDS are also weaker, with sellers at 884. The "new issue for the moment is not attracting buyers into this stock, as they are only offering $53.75 against sellers' ideas of $84.
HUMPHREYS have buyers at $15.35, but sellers are holding out for $15.50. I feel that sellers will have-to-coms dowa,
+
HONG KONG TRAMS remained fixed more or less between $20.10 and $20.00. There were buyers at the former figure during Friday and Saturday.
DAIRY FARMS are a shade easier and sales were recorded" at at this figure there are $93.93; further buyers.
HONG KONG ROPES closed firm with sales during the week at $11.95. At the close of business" or Saturday buyers were offering as much as $11.10, but the shares are scarce.
HONG KONG AMUSEMENTS improved slightly, closing with buyers at $95.
EWOS closed easy with sellers at is. 11.30, although with the news of the re-opening of the mills in Shanghai a few buyers appeared in
HONG KONG DAILY PRESS, TUESDAY, JULY 29, 1930.

The fortnightly report issued by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce states
Cotton Place Goods.

The following reports have been received: Since last reporting the market has shown more activity and considerable sales of Shadow Stripe. Poplins have been made for ship. ment, November onwards. Silver prices accepted have been on a very low basis, and, in some instances, indicato, assistance from exchange rates well above those ruling to-day. In addition to above, dealers have given attention to White Mattings and Coloured Stripe Poplins, and fair lines are mentioned. Prices reported in these instances have also been on a-relatively low basis.

Another report atates:-There has been decidedly more activity since the last report and some important
business has been settled in Shadow' Stripe Poplina, Cotton Mattings and Spring Fancies for end of the year shipment. The price-levels an certain lines seem to point to the utilisation of favourable exchange, but other lines have been settled at current rates. Correspondents are asked to fill up the coupon appearing elsewhere address their queries to and "Kufan," care of the Editor of this paper, and to give their names and address. It is desirable that a nom de plume be also included, in order that readers can readily identify the answers intended for

ers are accepting business at a sacrifice in order to prevent closing down. Clearances of cotton cargo have been on a smaller acale and the local market for White Shirtings is dull.
Woolians.
Enquiries have been made for Scarlet Blanketa but replacing costs are still too far above local prices to permit new business. The offtake of various Inta of woollen (for the most part considerably overdue) is a satisfactory feature and stocks on hand are gradually being reduced.
