ENGLAND v. AUSTRALIA IN 1880.
THE FIRST REAL TEST-MATCH.
OVERSEA VISITORS BOYCOTTED BY COUNTY CLUBS.
Australia:
The Editor of Wisden's Al-, cricketers of that season arrived manack." Mr. C. Stewart Caine, here in very unhappy circum
stances. The team taken out by writes in the Observer the following Lord Harris in the winter of 1878- interesting account of the first rea had been subjected to disgraceful test match between England and behaviour on the part of the crowd in the match as Sydney, and the occurrence naturally aroused a lot of indignation over herz. Further to prejudice the prospects of the tour, the question had not been put to the English authorities as to whethor another visit of Australian players-the first bad taken place only two years earlier-would be welcome. As a consequence, very few of the counties would arrange fixtures; indeed, with the month of August in progress, only five eleven- a-side encounters had been contest- ed by the tourists. Apart from the opportunity furnished by a match against an eighteen at the Crystal Palace, London had seen nothing of the three great bowlers-Spof- forth, Palmer, and Boyle--about whose storting achievements every

The records accepted in these days give two Test Matches, as being decided in Australia in the month of March, 1977, and another in Australia in January, 1870, but the first encounter worthy to be so described was that at Kennington Oval in September, 1880-fifty years ago this summer. In the gaines of 1877 Liflywhite's ten-nowadays referred to as England-was a pure ly professional combination, and therefore far from representative, and, on the occasion of the first

The two Yorkshire profes battle commenced. sionals were the only bowlers of real account in the side, which, furthermore, lacked a competent wicket-keeper, L. Hone, who officiat ed in that capacity, possessing scarcely any of the qualifications necessary for the satisfactory dis charge of the duties of the post.
A National Demand.
Like so many other contests be tween England and Australia, the first match produced a memorable struggle. Spofforth, owing to an injury, was unhappily prevented from taking part in the game, and England, with W. G. Grace put ting together an innings of 132, batted for the whole of the first day On Tuesday, the Australians, in- The claim made for the game atto a total of 420, were all out for stoad of making a saisfactory reply the Oval in 1880 as the first "real 149, and, following on, lost, despite "Test"-the expression was not in.

In short, a national demand practically compelled the arrangement of the encounter.
Great Uphill Fight,

These extraordinary stands, al though adding 140 runs for the last two partnerships, left England with no more than 37 to make. The task appeared so easy that, instead of W. G. going in with his brother E. M., as on the Monday, it was decided to give Alfred Lyttelton and Fred Grace, who had failed in the first innings, a chance of hitting off the raus. Dire disaster attended this ill-advised course, Fred Grace was, for the second time, dismissed without scoring, and his departure was so quickly, followed by those of others that, almost before anyone could realise what was happening. Lyttelton, Edward Grace, A. P. Lucas, and William Barnes, in addition to Fred Grace, were all out for 30. At this critical point W. G. joined Frank Pons and, as it happened, the remaining runs were obtained without further loss, England scrambling home by five wickets, but, had not Bonnor miss- ed Penn at slip, the Anish-even with Lord Harris and A. G. Steel to come-might have been desper stely close.
