Miss Cole said that such an action was impossible, as the French

The recent French Army Estimates and the decisions on the frontier fortifications have had a strong reaction in Italy in the form of anti-French demonstrations in the town of Bari and other places, but the Press stems to have been order ed to maintain a very moderate stream of comanent.

LONELY ISLANDERS TO MIGRATE.
The decision of the Government was made known last month to re- move St. Kilda, that bleak" and lonely island in the Atlantic, its few remaining inhabitants.
The evacuation has been decided upon at the urgent solicitation of the islanders themselves, among whom there is not left a sufficiency of able-bodied man power to carry on the services necessary to keep the little community in existence. The Scottish Office has fallen in with the demand that they shall not be exposed for another winter. to privation and penal-isolation.
Last winter they were four months without a mail, and between seven and eight months without im- ported foodstuffs.

NEW MOTOR SHIPS FOR BANK LINE.
FOR NEW YORK-FAR EAST SERVICE.
M.S. IRISBANK ARRIVES TO-DAY.
Due here to-day from New York, San Francisco and Manila, the twin screw motor cargo vessel Irisbank is the first of six fast new motor vessels constructed and under con- struction for the Bank Line, Ltd. (Andrew Weir & Co., managers). She will be followed at monthly intervals by the Lassiebank, Tay- bank, Tweedbank, Foyleback and Lacanbank
The first four have been built by Workman Clark at their Belfast yards and the remaining two by Harland and Wolff, the whole six being similar in dimensions. The' Workman Clark vessels, however, have Clark-Sulzer engines and the Harland & Wolff vessels have Bur- meister Wein engines. The follow- ing are the main dimensions:-
Lepath b.p., 425 ft.: moulded beam. 5 ft. moulded denth, 38 ft. 6 ins.; draught. 26 ft.; deadweight capa- citr. 8,000 tons.
The Irisbank has two engines each of 2,250 b.h.p. in five cylinders, with 680 mm. bore and stroke of 1200 mm. The speed of revolution for normal output is 100 v.p.m. and the vessel is able to maintain an average sea speed of 14 kots, load ed.
Built Under Special Survey... The ships are all of the shelter deck type built to Lloyd's highest class and under special aurres. There are five large cargo holds, and the shelters 'tween decks are in- sulated for the carriage of re frigerated cargo of various kinds. Tanks are also provided for the carriage of vegetable and other oil," the capacities varying from 60 tons to 630 tons. Provision has also been made for the carriage of Latex in the Fore Peak tank.
The engines are of a type in which the scavenging pump in driven direct, a natural arrangement in view of the employment of steam
