DUTCH EAST INDIES.

JAPANESE PENETRATION OF NO IMPORTANCE.

Eenry recently manifested as to the eventual economic penetration of the Netherlands East Indies by Japan are entirely dismissed by Mr. C. Leckerkorker, of the Nether- lands-Java Enstitute.

In an article in the Indische Gil, says the China Express and Telegraph, he shows not only that Japanese immigration is of no im. portance, but that Japan's share of the industrial activities of the territory is so small as to be scarce- ly worth notice...

O the Japanese who went to the Dutch East Indies in 1929, he says that 1,288 men and 469 women were resident in Java, and 1,350 men and 1,033 women in the outer posses sions.

REPORTS.

employ a great number of men at CHINA'S SILVER SITUATION high wages, there were many more. women then men, and, according to Mr. Lepkerkerker, anyone fami- liar with life in the Indies would understand why this was so, and that the occupation of those women was not that of military spies or industrial workers.

According to a recent census in Sumatra's East Coast, there were 373 Japanese" ruen as against 41 Japanese women; in Acheers 78 as agalast 90, and in Banka 18 against 45. In any case, the increase in the men was not so considerable us justify, the fear of unfair econo- mic competition.

As regards industries with Japan- ese capital during the last few years, Japan had taken a modest share in rubber culture, in "silk production, forest exploitatión (Bornec), and in fisheries (Batavia, Padang, Menada). At Tandjong Priok alone there were 700 Japan. ese fishermen. A few devoted them. selves to agriculture on a' small scale (rubber, coconut, pepper, etc.), together with silk-worm" cul- tivation in Bencoolen, and diamond digging in Borneo, while in the Aroe Islands, in New Guinea and found in parts of Timor оде Japanese pearl fishers.

Japan possesses a Department for the Colonic, and Emigration, which naturally extends its activi- ties to the Dutch East Indies, but Japanese immigration apparently makes very little response.

In 1929 only 211 Japanese applied for admission as compared with 4,400 Netherlanders, 950 Europeans of other nationalities, 9,900 Chin- che, 1,200 Arabs.
