GOSSIP FROM THE SHARE-MARKET.
NO IMPROVEMENT IN RATES BUT MARKET IS QUITE ACTIVE.

Gossip often moves the market, but no incestur should either buy by sent un market gossip only.
A fair volume of business was transacted during the past week, although rates and not show any appreciable improvement. The gen eral feeling is that no improvement is to be anticipated for some time to come, bus, it would be a fallacy; to think that because rates are not likely to improve very soon that cheap shares will be dumped in In fact, there are the market. quite a number of people who 'con- opportune sider the "present an time to come in to buy, and this is one of the reasons why rates are maintained. The heavy July Settle- ment, accompanied by the enziness of the money-market, are also, in some measure, responsible for the present state of the market. I understand that the coming settle meat is quite heavy, and possibly there may be some reaction in the market next week, when the work of "covering" commences. #
CHINA FROVIDENTS - These shares were dealt in by small holders at 35.40, and there appear to be quite a number of buyers about.

Enquiries for the moment appear to be mostly in low-valued shares like" Providents, Underwriters, Hotels, Ropes, and one others. There are always buyers in the market for these shares, and if there should be any improve- ment, I think one of these four stocks will be the first to move.
The news from Shanghai during the week was discouraging, and Ewos were reported to have drop ped to Tls. 11. I understand that even at this figure there were quite a number of sellers, and after many parcels had been taken off the mar- ket, the rate formed up to Tla. 11.30, with sellers predominating. This is not a nice state of affairs, especially for. holders of Ewo03.

BANKS--A rates varying from 81,310 to 21,315, shares changed hands during the week, and at the close there were buyers in the market at the former figure.

INSURANCE-Several big parcels of shares were handled during the week between 9440 to $446, and the market closed with buyers in evidenco.

CHINA UNDERWRITERS - There was a light easing-off last were sald at week, and shares $2.60 to $2.70. They were slightly stronger at the close.

stocks are wanted at $950.

DOUGLASES.-There was no de- mand whatever. The quotation is at $24.50, and I think shares can be had at, well under this figure.

STAR FERRIES These sharea quitered down somewhat. Business was done during the week at $33.

HONG KONG & KOWLOON WHARVES-There" were sellers at the close at 8170, but during the week deals at $168 and 160 were negotiated. The market is a shade, easier in this stock.
