(Br "W.S."]

In last week's article passing reference was made to the medal struck to celebrate the first entry of Queen Victoria into the City of London after her accession. It is considered, therefore, that the time is opportute to make a little break in the Postal History of Hong Kong, and touch on some other matters of philatelic interest.

Hong Kong Collectors Denounced.

It is interesting and amusing, in these days, when stamp collecting is the most popular hobby and the keenest brains of the world find their recreation in philatelie study, to recall the atmosphere of ridicule in which its growth took place. We need go no further afield than อน own doorstep for evidense, since in 1873, Mr. Lister, who was then Postmaate:-General of Hong Kong, felt disposed to denounce collectors in his Annual Report, and referred to them, mild phraseology, us beug of 'feeble intellect. This gentleman lived. sufficiently long to learn the ab- surdity of his opinion, in" that it was a collector who brought to notice the forgery of 1 dollar surcharge adopted on the 10 cents purple on red stamps, which was applied ofheially on the 00 cent purple on red.

When the case opened, police evidence was given, both Sergeant Johnäoh and Detective Sergeant Flattery giving evidence. At the outset I intended to come to Hong Kong to look for work. When I was in the country I met a friend, Ngan Hing Kee, who Works in Central Market, and asked him for a job. SILLY ASS!

STRAY DONKEY HOLDS UP TRAFFIC.

1

For the past few days the re- vidents of Happy Valley have been wondering why two stray asses are allowed to roam about the place, with no attendant whatever. Some times they hold up the traffic and do not pay the slightest attention to the houting of motor car horns, or the bells on the tram cars. They just drift about as they like, browsing wherever they see a green patch. They are only a little higher than a big Alsatian deg, and never go about singly.
