Some details of this affair appear- ed. last week in a Reuter message. A correspondent of the North | China Daily News takes it a little further and is able to confirm the clear position of the French.
An unfortunate incident occurred at one of the cabarets in the ex- German concession on June 14 Three French sailors on arriving. at the Palemo had a dispute with their ricsha pullers about the fare to be paid. A crowd collected, and were so menacing that other sailors emerged from the café to help those who were being attacked. A squad of armed men rushed from the Police headquarters and fired their revolvers at random. The crowd disappeared, the sailors got inside the cabaret, and a member of an American naval patrol and one" of the Chinese policemen were found to be the casualties, the former. being shot in the thigh and the
