An intensive study of the causes of decline of American exports to China, including all Chinese trade relations, appears to be assured, as a result of the Senate Foreign Relations Committer's favourable report on the "Pittman resolution authorizing expenditure of Gold $20,000 for this purpose.

If liquor had been cut out altogether from army sup plies a lot of trouble would have been saved."

The Death Penalty. Speaking of how he personally supervised the execution for deser tion for a young soldier who was made helplessly drunk before he was shot, General Crozier declared, I would do it again, I saw to it that he had enough to drug himself thoroughly. I look at it from the humane point of view. He passed out all the happier for it. He was quite a decent sort of fellow really. Why should be suffer the agony of waiting for the end? He had offended against the law of man only."
General Crozier added that the question of the death penalty in such cases must be regarded not from the personal feelings of the individual but from the safety, of and the State.

San Francisco, June 3-With the universities and colleges of the state of California graduating nearly 10,000 students within the next few days, the total number of graduates for the entire United States is estimated at nearly 147,000 men and women.
A survey of the situation indicates that relatively few of there are placed in advance, and that in all "probability the already grave sinemployment problem will be aggravated.
Most colleges reported that the demand for their graduates was declining sharply. This was pre- sumably, due to the general de- pression throughout the country.
