WOOLLEN INDUSTRY

WORKERS ACCEPT WAGE REDUCTION.

[THROUGH REUTER'A AGENCY.)

LONDON, June 11. Four of the trade unions engaged in the raw wool section of the wool textile industry have now officially advised their members to accept the reduction of 10 per cent. and an almost general return to work

DECLINE IN US. TRADE WITH CHINA.

An intensive study of the causes of decline of American exports to China, including all Chinese trade relations, appears to be assured, as a result of the Senate Foreign Relations Committer's favourable report on the "Pittman resolution authorizing expenditure of Gold $20,000 for this purpose.

"If you tell the unvarnished truth you sometimes must appear to be sensational. The majority of the world likes to walk about in blink ers," said Brigadier-General F. P. Crozier when discussing with a re-: porter his book, "A Brass Hat in No Man's Land," which was pub lished last month. In this book the General tells stories of a private being shot for cowardice and deser tion, a bullying N.C.O. being blown on the employers' terms is expect-mercial Treaty. up by his own men, battalion comed forthwith. manders to whom the safety of the line was of less importance than. the whisky bottle,” and other episodes of the grim and sordid side of modern warfare,

Referring to whisky-drinking in the line, General Crozier said: "I do not say everybody in the line was drunk. I think very few were drunk. But there is a great difer- ence between drinking and getting drunk. I would point out that the canteens were able to hand over huge profits out of the sale of liquor despite the fact that they had to wipe off tens of thousands of pounds damage to stores by enemy

Kuts.

"My experience of the front line was that there was very little drunkenness. There was too much drinking behind the line. I blame the people who supplied the drink rather than the men who took it. I had one or two cases under my notice where officers were not able to carry on their duties because of drinking habits. If liquor had been cut out altogether from army sup plies a lot of trouble would have been saved."

اج

The Death Penalty. Speaking of how he personally supervised the execution for deser tion for a young soldier who was made helplessly drunk before he was shot, General Crozier declared, I would do it again, I saw to it that he had enough to drug himself thoroughly. I look at it from the humane point of view. He passed out all the happier for it. He was quite a decent sort of fellow really. Why should be suffer the agony of waiting for the end? He had offended against the law of man only."

General Crozier added that the question of the death penalty in such cases must be regarded not from the personal feelings of the individual but from the safety, of and the State.

the army

In conclusion the General ob- served: "I am câtirely for abolish- ing war, but if you put men into war you anrst leave it to those who have to carry it through as to how it shall be done. War justifies everything men do to secure victory and, to bring hostilities to an end."

MANY U.S. GRADUATES TO SEEK WORK.

(UNISED PRZ88.]

San Francisco, June 3-With the universities and colleges of the state of California graduating nearly 10,000 students within the next few days, the total number of graduates for the entire United States is estimated at nearly 147,000 men and women.

A survey of the situation indicates that relatively few of there are placed in advance, and that in all "probability the already grave sinemployment problem will be aggravated.

Most colleges reported that the demand for their graduates was declining sharply. This was pre- sumably, due to the general de- pression throughout the country.
