The largest cheque was for. £3,000 "odd, in respect of £10,000 of stock which was purchased by Mr. Philip Bright, son of Mr. John Bright, for a Londen hospital.

The debenture-holders formed a .committee to fight their case in the Ulster High Court, and subscribed toward the cost. All the subscrip- tions will be returned.

The total value of the cheques sent out amounts to over £207,000, which is the largest sum ever paid out in Ireland as a result of litiga- tion.

TELEPRINTERS NEXT?

G.P.O.'S NEW SCHEME UNDER CONSIDERATION.

A public telegraph exchange to enable subscribers to communicate with each other by means of tele. printers is the happy idea that is now being considered by the Gen. eral Post Office.

A teleprinter, it was explained recently, is an apparatus with a kupboard by which any typiat, with a little preliminary instruction, will be able to send a subscriber's telegram, and the message will be automatically printed in type-writ tea characters at the office to which it is sent.

It should be very clearly under stood, it was stated, that the scheme 15 at present in a tentativa atage. No decision has yet been reached. How would the coat, it was asked, compare with that of the tele phone!

It would depend, was the reply, upon the use that would be made of the service. It is proposed that there should be a flat rate of 270 a year where subscribers' premises are within two miles' radius of the Central Telegraph Office. Beyond this radius, and within four miles, the rate would be £76. This charge would cover the cost of installa- tion, the instruments and their maintenance, the maintenance of the lines, and all communications,

The advantages were stated to be these

1.-There would be a type- written record of all messages both at the sending end and the receiving end...

2 Messages could be trans- mitted even if there should be no one in attendance at the in- strument at the receiving end.

3-Secrecy would be ensured, the Exchange operator having no. means of interrupting communi- cations passing between subscri

bers.

4.-There would be no delays. Messages could be sent at any time; they would be received in- "stantaneously, and replies could

be tent and received at, encë, Each subscriber would have & number, and by pressing a button. on one's instrument the exchange operator would be called, and the required connection obtained and signalled by the abbreviated word
