A CHOPPER.

The premises of the Hung Tak Bank, of 153, Queen's Road Central. was the scene of a tragic affair in the early hours of Saturday morn- ing when five schoolboys were hack- ed to death and two adults seriously injured as a result of one of the tenants on the premises running amuck.

The names of those who were. killed and injured are given below:

The business of the bank is.con- ducted on the ground floor, the upper, storeys being used as a sort of mess. The boys who were kill- ed lived on the first and second floors.. It seems from accounts gathered by our representative at the bank that at about 4.80 a.m. La Man Pui, who lived on the first floor, got out of bed and found his way to the cookhouse, which is at the back of the third storey of the house. Here he is alleged to have secured a large meat knife of Chi- nese pattern. He then descended to the first floor, where, it is alleged, be attacked four boys, literally killing them in their sleep. It would seem that the attack was so sudden that no alarm of any kind was raised.

PROTEST AGAINST IRREGU.

LAR TAXATION.

A strange situation exists in Swatow, where all business sud- denly came to 26 standstill ca Thursday.

According to information reach- ing us from a correspondent, this

strike was the sequel to the arrest of the manager of a Chinese bank in rather remarkable circum-

stances.

The trouble dates back to the end. of last year, when the Swatew authorities imposed a tax of 20 per egut. upon all transactions between the public and the local electric light company, the railway, water- works, and steam-launch company. In other words, every consumer of electric current or water, and every railway and steam-launch passer- ger, contributed an additional 20 per cent, on his bill or ticket to the Cahtoa war-chest. The impost, was for the purpose of raising funds to support the campaign against the Ironsides in Kwangsi.

Bafusal to Pay.

Last month the Canton authori ties-with the approval of the Non- king Government-intimated that the levy would be discontinued, and the various companies concerned issued circulars to their clients and patrous stating that the extra 20 per cent. would not be collected.

It is reported, however, that the Mayor of Swatow decided that the tax should be continued, and it is said that many people continued to pay the additional levy rather than have any dispute with the authori ties.

Bank Manager Arrested,

It is stated that this plain speak- ing gave such offence to the muni cipal authorities that the bold banker was arrested on a charge of "anti-revolutionary activity."

When news of his arrest became

generally known in Swatow, all business suddenly came to a dead stop. The banks closed, sad shop keepers put up their shutters. The Chamber of Commerce sent a tele- gram to the Nanking Government reporting what had happened-and there was a swift sequel to this protest. The banker, was released from custody.

What the next-development will be is a matter for speculation. Some think the Mayor will be asked to resign, but in any case the incident is of great, interest as showing the result of combined action in protest against improper taxation...

This man evidently did not know of the terrible tragedy that had been enacted below. In any case, he showed great bravery in tackling the man.
