NATIONALIST II. REDEEMS HIMSELF IN EYES OF PUBLIC.

Saturday's racing showed clearly that Zorhan is an outstanding pony and that it will be a long time before he will suffer his first defeat in Hong Kong. The pony started in the opening event of the day, and notwithstanding a 'concession of 22 pounds to Piccalilli, accounted for the latter by four lengths, winning in effortless fashion. He was an odds-on favourite, and despite the fact that Piccalilli adopted runaway tactics, the race was never in doubt.
The same, however, cannot be said of Royal Flush, who started an even bigger favourite for the Substitute Stakes. Windsor Stag, one of the three starters in this race, set a cracking pace and drew away from Royal Flush from the word "Go." Mr. Heard, on the favourite, had all his work cut out for him to draw level with the Stag, and it was only in the last hundred yards or so that Royal Flush drew level and then slowly forged ahead to win. It was one of the most thrilling races seen for some time, and but for the excellent jockeyship of Mr. Heard, a different tale might have been told.
Nationalist II. scored his first win in Hong Kong and, în doing so, accounted for a very classy field. Many have, by this time, looked upon Nationalist II. as a failure, but the animal certainly redeemed itself in the eyes of the Hong Kong public by its meritorious victory on Saturday.

The Novice Baco resulted in popular victory for Mr. A. W. Roza, who steered in Young Pre tender. Mr. H. C. Lee rode Chera peake Bay in this event, and despite some trouble at the outset, handled the animal brilliantly right through, It was hard hick that he failed to get a place..
O-Moon once again showed his class by accounting for the "B" Clase Customs Handicap. This animal will ever be a problem to racegoers, as he is too good for the B and not nearly good enough, for the A class mounts.
The starting of the ponies was on occasion very much delayed, and it would not be a bad idea if the races fixed for June commenced half en hour earlier in order that the last rase might be run ia decent light."
THE RACING.
Customs Handicap "A" Clask. Zorhan, Piccalili and New Year's Eve were the caly starters in this race. Piccalilli carried 144 lbs. against Zorhan's 168 lbs. and Mr. Harriman, who rode the former pony, look full advantage of this fast. He sent Piccalilli to the front and set cracking pace, but Zorban was equal to the occasion MODERN high pressure living and the and drew level at the distance post, eventually winning comfort- enervating effect of climate changes, ably by four lengths. Bandit Outrages.
In conclusion, let me say that. I read with regret the report pab- lished in to-day'a Chinese and for- eign papers that the Wuhu Catho- lic Mission fears grave disorders. General Chiang has spent millions of dollars in équipping his armies only for his personal aggrandise- ment, while the lives and property. within his jurisdiction are not given the-proper protection. It is also a deplorable fact that bandit troubles in the South have never been seri-. ously dealt with by the Nanking. Government. The outrages com- mitted by the bandits are too well
known, and they are still allowed to perpetrate their crimes without hindrance.
