GLASS-MAKING IN CHINWANGTAO.
INTERESTING INDUSTRY DESCRIBED.
TREMENDOUS HEAT NECESSARY IN PROCESS.
A naval officer who recently had the opportunity of inspecting the glass-works at Chin- wangtae kindly sends us the following impressions of his visit
The factory makes its own gas which is a very essential item of the works, they have large cylinders (like upright boilers), the bottoms of which are sealed by a wat bed. Coal is fed in from the top until the cylinder is full of burning coal, and round the top of the boiler are a number of small holes with large pokers fitted. Every few minutes these are worked in all directions to prevent the coal eaking, and in addition they have what the man- azer called a heat (or air) pipe coming in at the bottom of the cyclinder, sending a pressure up through the centre of the burning coal, also to assist in keeping the coul divided.
*
The gas generated is led away through canals. and gathers into a huge gas chamber, where it passes through a form of sieve to keep it broken into small atoms; it is eventually fed into a large farmace. This furnace consists of an immense gas fire and generates a heat of 1,600 degrees. Placed in this fur

The process is going on continual- ly. If say 10 tons of glass is re- moved at the other end which will be mentioned later, then 10 tons of mixture is placed through the feed door, and the furnace has to he cleaned out once a year,
