The losses in fourteen steamships total 270, three of these vessels meriting special notice. The Italian transport Citta di Palermo (fifty- seven
names), carrying among others -150 British soldiers, was sunk by mine on January 8, 1916, ten miles from Brindisi; and in rescu- ing the survivors two of the British.
