UGLY AFFAIR IN SHANGHAI.

FOREIGN LADY STABBED.

Running amok with a knife on the evening of May 5, a Chinese Even Income Tax has its lighter within a minute or so managed to side. Excellent stories were toldstab Mrs. Cameron, wife of Dr. recently by Mr. P. Barnes, Inspec. E. Cameron, and two French tor of Taxes, to a gathering of soldiers of the 104 battalion of business men in Birmingham. Colonial Infantry before he w23 seized and arrested by Dr. Cameron and a Annamite policeman.

One of the best relates to

an amusing experience in dealing with "irregularities," which, explained Mr. Barnes, is "a neutral term used to cover anything between quite innocent mistakes and the grossest possible fraud. This is the story:--

The affair occurred shortly after 5 pm in Rue Cohen, near Avenue Patain. Dr. Cameron was driving his car and taking his wife and child out for a run. He had not long left his house at 687 Avenue Foch, when in Ruc Cohen he saw. a Chinese suddenly rush in front of the car and try to stop it. Dr. Cameron promptly swerved his car to one side and avoided the man, who thereupon jumped towards the car and stabbed at Mrs. Cameron. wounding her slightly in the left

In one case a delinquent, his ac- countant, and an inspector were together: the accountant and the inspector were making computa- tions of the duty that had to be paid. After about an hour the tax- payer, who was an ex-sergeant-ma- jor, said that he could not stand this much longer." The account- ant, and the inspector told him that they were sorry to be so long.. but they would be as quick as they

could..

At the end of another hour the -sergeant-major said: "Do you know what I am going to do am going to get a revolver and then I am going to shoot you (point. ing to the inspector) and then you (painting to the accountant), and then myself."

The Inspector's reply was that he had no objection, provided that the ex-sergeant-major would verse, the order of shooting. One up for the Inspector!

In the meantime the two French soldiers, on N.C.0, and a private had arrived on the scene and at- tempted to seize hold of the man, but received nasty wounds in the face and hands in the process, While the man was stabbing at the French soldiers, Dr. Cameron and the Annamite managed to seize and disarm him, finding his weapon to be a short and rusty knife.

The police have the man in cus- tody now, and are experiencing difficulty in their attempts to in dentify him. He is believed to ne mentally deranged.

The Fiend Himself."" Another anecdote referred to the Schedule D return form, on which are the words, "I desire to be as sessed by the leaving it open to the person concerned to write "General Commissioners" or "Spe- asked for her husband's Christian cial Commissioners." One clergy-name, his occupation and address. man wrote a note to the effect that She replied that
