- The system of Travellers Cheques was originated in 1901 by
the American Express Company with the object of creating a form of travel currency which would give the holder the security of a letter of credit and at the same time the convenience of local : currency. The Company registered the cheques under the trade, name of 'AMERICAN EXPRESS TRAVELERS' CHEQUES " the word Travellers' being spelled with one "l'". The advantage of the Cheques" was so apparent that other banking institutions adopted the system. Suk
