Mr. Justice Maugham, in the Chancery Division last month, held that a Gretna Green marriage- none of the parties had resined in Scotland 21 days before the cere mony was not valid. "He said that it was an idle form of marriage..
It was stated that the man and
woman held hands over the anvil in a blacksmith's shop. The man put a ring on the woman's "Enger and the blacksmith pronounced them man and wife. Two, witnesses
were present.
The woman had a "substantial " fortune, and it was difficulties' aria- ing out of this marriage that were considered by the court.
Sir Thomas Hughes: I think that she had been advised that the Greinn Green ceremony had no. effect...
Sir Thomas Hughes said that what happened concerning the Gretna Green ceremony, was rather, curious,
The couple left London by car or September 28, arrived at Gretna Green on the 99th, and went immed- intely to the blacksmith's shop.
Counsel said he thought it would f be difficult to justify what took place there. Apparently the woman described herself as Heler, Betts, which was her maiden name.
The judge: That was right. Sir Thomas: Yes; but what fol- lows was not" of the parish of The plaintiff, who sued under the Dornoch ir. Sutherlandshire.” It name of Helen Sefton-Toms, asked

ground that, in the circumstances, she was absolutely entitled to them.
First Marriage..
Sir Thomas Hughes, K. C.. for the plaintiff, said that the trustees were not hostile, but as the circumstances were rather carious they very pro perly said they were not prepared to transfer without an order of the. court.
The plaintiff was formerly a Miss Helen Betts, and on January 9, 1923. she married Mr. Derek Sefton- Tomy.
The woman had a very substan- zial fortune, which was settled the day before the marriage, the trust fund being something like £40,000 in value. The defendants were the trustees of that settlement,
The marriage was not a fortunato one, and on March 14, 1998, there was a decree nisi, which on October 3, 1928, was rande absalate.
There were no children, and on November 26, 152, the woman executed an appointment of the trust funds to herself. So far it was perfectly plain that she had be come entitled under the appoint.

Grey furs are best cleaned with fig dust, which is obtainable from most corn merchants. Use the fig dust in the same manner as the calcined magnesia, remembering to take a fresh supply as soon as it becomes dirty. Complete the process by tapping the fur lightly in the wrong side until every trace of the powder is removed.
In the case of brown or black- furs the treatment is slightly differ ent. Take a little bran and place; it on a tin tray in the oven.
When it is warm rub it well" into the surface of the fur with a soft cloth or piece of flannel. Then re- tove the tiny particles of husk by brushing gently with a soft bristl
ed brush.
When the furs are quite clean they may be stored away" in the following manner: Roll them up carefully in linen or thick brown paper, with a good supply of cayenne pepper or naphthaline between the folds, and pack then into an air-tight box
