H. A. Barry Bert, as he is fami- liarly know-is nephew of Ernest Barry who held the world's title against all comers from 1912 until he was beaten on the Thames, his home water, by the Australian A. Feltor in 1919. The next year Ernest went to Australia and avenged his defeat on the Para- rata river afterwards retuning with the title.

Bert has inherited much of his uncle's strength, skill and water- manship. After being beaten for the championship by ten lengths or Buarrand Inlet, Vancouver, in 1927, by Major Goodsell of Canada, Bert returned the next year and led the Canadian' over the line by a similar distance on the same water. Since then be has remain ed unchallenged until Phelps re cantly invited him to defend his crown.
