Shanghai, reports the N.C. Daily

Mr. Hau was travelling to Hong Kong by the steamer Deli Maru from Shanghai and the vessel was passing the Swatow coast, when pirates, disguised as steerage pas- sengers and led by a woman, over- powered the officers, shot the In- dian guards, and seized the vessel, which was taken to Bing Bay where Mr. Hsu and other victims, as well As a large quantity of booty, were landed. A letter was received later by Mr. Hau's family demanding ran som, and two delegates were sent south to negotiate. The Deli Maru was later released.

On March 15, according to statement made by Mr. Hau to the Chinese press, the authorities learn- ed of the bandits' whereabouts, so strong force was sent to fight them. An attack was made and, after three days' fighting, the pirates were defeated and fled in confusion. During the fighting, Mr. Hau and another victim 'escap- ed and reached a place about 150 miles away. They made the trip in eight days on foot, during which Mr. Hsu and his companion were half starved.

However, they received much assistance from the villagers, whe helped them. to get to Hong Kong, and they reached the Colony on March 27.

Mr Hsu 1 reported by the Chi- nese papers to be a physical wreck, and it will he some time before he is out of hospital and able to resume work again.
