VERANDAH SUITS OF CHINESE SILKS.
Pyjamas are still holding their own for negligée wear, and aro certainly much more sensible than the trailing, tea gown of pre-war days, especially for use in hot climates. An attempt is being made in Paris to replace pyjamas by very elaborate night gowns with accompanying cloaks, but the Pyjama suit is certainly cooler and more suitable for verandah wear in the hot weather. I saw in the Ladies' Salon of Lane, Crawford's the other day, two most attractiva pyjama ensembles made of Chinese brocade. I was particularly glad beenuse it seems a thousand pities that we English women should neglect these wonderful Chinese materials simply because wa fire in Hong Kong. It is understandable that we prefer European materials for formal wear, but there is no reason at all why we should not revel in oriental broendes on our own verandahs on summer even- ings.
One of these ensembles consists of a jumper and trousers of salmon pink satin, over which is worn a three quarter length coat of gold and pink trocade lined and faced with the satin.". All thruc pieces of the other ensemble are of blue brocaded silk piped and banded with old gold.

The skirt is trimmed with well placed frills. Admirable for sports wear would be a series of simply cut frocks in white uncrush- abio linen, having small touches of colour. This pair of screens is, accord- ing to esperts, the finest example of their, type in existence. They were presented to a wealthy rice merchant as a token of esteem by an Emperor of the Chung Leung Dynasty and it was only the direst necessity which persuaded his des- cendants to part with them. They are of light brown lacquer crna
mented with cloisonné. The lucky seven colour rock appears on both, one is further ornamented with a peach tree in fruit, a stage and bats, and the other with a pine tree, storia and a stag-all felicitous symbols.
The colouring is exquisite and impossible of reproduction now-a- days. The screens are mounted in fine carved, blackwood frames and are as ornamental as they are valuable and interesting. Any one who is interested in Chinese art should make a point of seeing these screens before they are packed for delivery to their new owner.
