CANTON TRADE
NOTES.
There have been large arrivals of timber from the North River dis- triots recently. The price has fallen considerably.
*
Due to over-demand, the prices at hen and ducks' eggs have risen from 82.60 and 82.50 to 83.25 and 82.00 per hundred respectively, Canton is a distributing centre for eggs in the Province.
The cotton yarn market on Tues- day continued rather quiet, but prices rose by one to two dollars per bale on account of the scarcity of stocks. The quotations in Shang- hai also rose by 50 cents, on that day,

FOREIGN COMPETITION AT HOME AND ABROAD.
GROWING "IMPORTS.
Foreign competition as home and abroad was the subject of a long and exhaustive lecture given to the Ashton and District Mill Managers' Association by Mr. Alfred Crick- more, editor of the Textile Weekly, Foreign competition in the cotton trade, he said, was due to many circumstances, some of which were beyond their control, but there was
phase of competition about which little was said when the topic of cotton trade depression was raised. This was the market on the door-- step which was capable of further development-the home market.
In the export markets our lost serious competitor was Japan. Al- though our exports had been more or less stationary, the imports had bern growing year after year. The weakness of the primary

cost of Over £1,250,000 sterling.
Manufacturers of matches, whose business has been exceedingly bad due to foreign competition, have taken action to improve the quality of their products. They have also decided to appeal to the Governon all dips. ment to increase the tax on foreign matebes.
Demand for raw silk is still dis-
appointing. Last month, 2391 picula of raw silk and 3,471 piculs of waste silk were exported abroad. showing a decrease of 50 piculs of raw silk but an inercase of $10 piculs of waste silk over the preced- ing month.

The price of wrapping paper from the North River District has risen to $3 per picul, as compared with 814 a few years ago. In re cent years, sore of the manufactur ers have had to suspend business due to keen rivalry and consequent ly the production has been limited, causing a sharp rise in prices.

Merchants dealing in foreign goods have been doing diminished business since the movement for the promotion of Chinese goods. Their business has also been adversely affected by the high exchange rate. They declare that the consumption of foreign goods in the city has fallen to two thirds of normal.
