THE CAPTAIN'S CUP.

[B "WRYNECK.”)

B.D. Evans qualified for the Cap- tain's Cup with 37-1374 which, in the circumstances, was a very ereditable performance,"

The conditions at Fanling were really difficult over the week-end. There was a strong wind blowing most of the time and. the greens were not easy. The rain has kept the fairway comparatively soft, and with the way the grass is growing, I reckon the course is playing five strokes longer than last year. Con- sequently I do not expect we shall see any long handicap players re- turning 12 nett to win any of the Easter competitions, and the man who can hit a long carry will reap his just reward.

Playing for Position. One of the objects of the lay-out of a golf course should be to make the game easiest, for the player who can place his shot, whether it be off the tee or through the green,

At Fanling there are only two holes, namely the 11th and 17th, where any appreciable advantage can be gained by playing for definite spot, and both of these holes are ideal examples. At the 11th, by cutting the corner as close. as possible, the chances of being on in two are increased enormously. At the 17th if you can hit a really long ball on to that soft patch on. the left, you nearly always find the ball sitting up nicely to give you a chance of a glorious second over the trees onto the green, whereas further out to the right the ground is much harder and the ball often

Talking of competitions, players should remember that all putts, however short, must be holed. That may seem elementary; but it is for gotten sometimes. And another thing-there is no local rule alies very close.

Steel Shafts,

Since the B. & A. legalised the use of the steel shaft last November there has been time at home to give it a fair trial. The general opinion seems to be that steel will not oust the hickory shaft and that the proportion will be about 50-50 The players who derive the gres test benefit from the new shaft are those with the longer handicaps The torsional rigidity of the steel shaft does not accentuate errors made in the execution of shots, and alicing, often the bugbear of, the indifferent performer, can be more easily cured,

So far as the iron clubs are con- corned, the steel shaft is not so

The 11th offers another opportun-

ity to develop this type of hole. At present I am always disappoint- ed if I don't snatch a stroke from bogey there. With the prevalling wind behind, provided you hit & reasonable drive, it doesn't matter much whereabouts on the fairway the bail finishes, though, when the ground is hard, the farther you are out to the right the better, as it gives you a facing slope on the green onto which to pitch and stay hear the pin. But any kind of se cond shot with the requisite length will find the green.

Now those three additioal bunkers shown in the sketch--which has been drawn from memory-given great advantage to the player who can place his tee shot out to the right. The player who takes the straight line can still get on in two, provided he can play the shot and get plenty of carry and there is nothing to stop the short hitter from obtaining a regulation 5..

It may be said: "Why go out of of your way to make it difficult for the man who takes the straight line, when, by placing your bunkers on the right, you can penalise the man who gets off the line!' The answer is that the player who has pushed his ten shot out, could "sl- ways avoid the traps by playing. well up to the left, when the natur a fall off the ground would shepherd his ball onto the green.
