CHARGES EACH.

Three charges-possession of 3.3 taels of prepared opium, keeping the first floor of 84; Laichikok Road na an opium divan, and of preparing opium-were brought against two Chinese before Mr. Whyte-Smith yesterday. To all the charges, the first defendant pleaded not guilty while the second man admitted the offence.

In the witness hox, R. O. Young stated that when the raid was car ried out on the premises, the first defendant was found supervising the boiling of opium, and said that he was in charge of the premises. The second man, who appeared on the scene later, said that he had gone there to smoke. Later, he took full responsibility, saying that he was the master of the floor, and the first defendant his foki.

The magistrale then remarked that he bad better hear the evidence, ng he did not see why the two men should be allowed to arrange be- tween themselves as to who should be convicted.

After evidence was taken, the men were each fined $100 or month's hard labour on each count.
