DEMOCRATS FALL OUT.

ON PROHIBITION ISSUE

DANIELS ATTACK ON RASKOB,

(UNITED PRESS. ]

Raleigh, Ga., March 29-Mr. Josephus Daniels, formerly Secret- ary of the Navy in the Wilson ad ministration, has publishedan ditorial in his New Observer de- manding that Mr. John J. Raskob should resign from the Democratic Party because he gave, G847,000 to the Association Against Prohibi- tion while he merely loaned $40,000 to the Democratic Central Com mittee for use in paying its debts. Mr. Daniels, an ardent "dry"

in

said that this evidently showed Mr. Raskob to be more interested destroying prohibition than in help ing the party which honoured him and whose debts, as Democratic national campaign manager, be created.

A Well-Alled 'Gellar,,, But it was an open seret that this stopping of inportation did not render the British Embassy "dry", because it was still possible to draw upon a well-alled cellar. Alcoholic drinks continued to be served by Sir Esme from this sup- ply, and to-day's' information in- dicates that they were served in some abundance.

In the event that Sir Ronată de- sires to continue to serve liquors, he must therefore import new stock.

Indications are that such a move will be highly popular among his diplomatic colleagues, for there was considerable feeling at the time of Sir Esme's decision. Other diplo mats pointed out that they had no desire to follow his course, but nei thers did they enjoy being placed

BEFORE SHANGHAI COURT.

Attack on Mr. Huston. Washington, March 29-A friend of the Administration told the United Press to-day that President Hoover wished Mr. Claudius H Huston, chairman of the Republ. can National Conumittee, to re sign quickly because the recent Senate investigations into lobbyists'

H. G. Evans, a former employee activities revealed Mr. Huston, as

of Frazar & Co.. Ltd.. of 19-20 Kiukiang Road, Shanghai, the head of the Tennessee River charged in H.M. Police Court be- Improvement Association, to have foro Mr. O. G. O. Anderson, Act- invested some of the association's ing Registrar, with fraudulent con- funds in stocks on a marginal basis version of funds entrusted to him

The funds were raised in connec-by his employers. tion with the fight on the Muscle Shoals federal power project.

Friends of Mr. Huston declared that, as head of the association, he had a perfect right to invest its funds in such fashion as he "con sidered wise. It was stated that he had no intention of resigning his Republican chairmansh⋅p.

wia

This is Mr. Anderson's first case in the Police Court where he is at present replacing Mr. I. T. Morria, now on kave. Mr. R. W. S. Win- ter, who prosecuted, asked for "an adjournment, which was granted. The case was consequently not heard yesterday, as the defendant also Meanwhile Senator Arthur R. asked for an adjournment on the Robinson, Republican of Indiana, ground that he did not have time announced that Mr. John to obtain a counsel, Raskah, Republican national chair- man during the Hoover Presidenti- al campaign, will be called in the lobbyist investigation to be ques tioned regarding the activities of the Association Against Prohibirten in which he was interested.

This is especially probable in view of Mr. Huston's testimony that Mr Raskob has done more lobbying than the Tennessee River

The accused signed personal hand for 2500 and deposited his passport with the court.-Y.-G., Daily News.

LITERARY DIGEST'S STRAW VOTE.

[UNITED FEESS.]

New York, March 28.--The tabu- lation of the Literary Digest's poll on the prohibition issue continues to show "wet" preferences in all states except Kansas, according to an announcement to-day by the Off. cials in charge of the straw vote...

A Feckoning of the vote in 20 states up to date shows 333,000 for enforcement, 383,000 for medifica tion, and 527,000 for complete re- peal of the prohibition law.

Colleges, and universities for the most part are voting in favour of modification or repeal.

The ratio of those favouring re- perl appears to be steadly increas ing as the tabulation continues.

New York has registered a three- to-one vote in favour of repeal of the law, it was stated.

Canadian Clearances. Washington, March 28-A report made public by the Treasury De- partment to-day stated that liquor clearance from Canada. to the Unic- cd States decreased 50 per cent. for February, as compared with the previous February.

WELL-FILLED CELLAR RUNNING DRY.

POSITION AT THE BRITISH EMBASSY.

[UNITED PRESS.] Washington, March 28-The Bri- tish Embassy cellar has "gone dry." This fact was disclosed to-day in the course of an interview with Lady Lindsay, the wife of the new British Ambassador, Sir Ronald Lindsay but the dryness is physi- cal, aot a matter of principle, and rumours prevail to the, effect that the new regime is about to lift the ban on liquor imports imposed as good-will gesture by the former Ambassador, Sir Esme Howard.

During the course of a talk with newspaper reporters, Lady Lindsay remarked:

"We took over the stock of liquor which Sir Eame left-which was practically nothing."

For many months there has been no importation of liquor and wines into the British Embassy. As a friendly gesture in recognition of the L. S. prohibition Inw, Bir Esme announced last year that he would take no further advantage of his diplomatic privilege as regards such imports."

HES SURREY PARENTS.

Twenty years ago Mr. Charles James Young, of Dormansland, near Lingfield, Surrey, used his savings to pay his passage to the United States, where he found em- ployment as a gardener. He is now manager on an estate at Long) Island.

During his 20 years in America ed. be saved £44,000, which he invest

Recently his parents. Mr. and Mrs, W. J. Young, of Dormansland, received a 'etter from him with the news that every penny of his -any- ings had been lost in the Wall Street crash. He wrote:-

"I have made my fortune and lost it, but one must not be dis- couraged.

"I keep smiling and am looking forward to the time when shall return home. I have fought many. often regain a fortune, one cannot hard battles, and although one can
